Summary Of Junot Diaz's How To Date A Brown Girl

According to the Kinsey Institute for Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, the average age at which teens lose their virginity is between 16.9 and 17.4 years old. Despite this statistic, there are still people who do not experience sex until later in life. Because people begin having sex at such varying times, two distinct groups of teens can be formed. Insiders, or those who have sexual experience, and outsiders, who have yet to engage in sexual activity. In Junot Diaz’s instruction manual “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie)”, the narrator Yunior, who is presumably a teenage Dominican boy, describes how to convince a girl to have sex. The manual explores the differences between sexual insiders and outsiders and describes …show more content…
Before his date begins, Yunior gets nervous when the girl does not arrive on time. However, when his date finally arrives at his house, Yunior is disappointed to see that, “a whole crowd [has shown] up at [his] apartment” and he knows that he “ain’t getting shit” (1). If the girl Yunior was determined to have sex with decided to bring “a whole crowd” of her friends with her, Yunior was undoubtedly not clear enough with his intentions when asking the girl out. With a large group of other people in the apartment, it is unlikely that the two would be able to do anything more intimate than kissing. A true insider would be able to subliminally tell his date that he intended to have sex with her, but because Yunior is not this suggestive, he becomes more of an outsider. Yunior also seems to have a hard time determining when a girl is interested in him. Even if a girl knows that he is trying to have sex with her, when she is uninterested, she might bring friends along with her, so that she can ensure that Yunior doesn’t get “shit”. Yunior’s incapacity for finding girls who are mutually interested in having sex with him can also be seen when he describes the girl he asked out not coming over at all. The girl in question ends up not coming, “over at all and the next day in school …show more content…
Like Yunior, his dates are also outsiders, but unlike him, they have little to no experience and essentially date through their parents, allowing them to make major decisions about sex and dating for themselves. The girls Yunior dates are generally condensed into the same social group, but because they come from such different socioeconomic backgrounds, they must be treated in a way that is respective to what they are used to. In reality, most people exhibit qualities of both insiders and outsiders, but when it comes down to it, the decision of which a person chooses to be can only be made by one person - the

The social view on adolescent sexuality varies across cultures, societies, communities, and families. It is a controversial topic because some individuals perceive sexuality as an important development of a teenager’s gender and identity, while others are opposed to the sexual interaction of adolescence. In the book Not Under My Roof, Amy Schalet demonstrates that in the Netherlands, society provides information and support about sexuality to teenagers. The normalization of sexual behavior in the Netherlands has allowed teenagers to develop a greater control over their sexual desires. In contrast, America’s perspective of adolescent sexuality makes the experience unenjoyable to young adults.…

Sex is a very powerful subject in modern society; in some cases it can be a positive means for the creation of life, however, it can also create a very negative aspect because of the abuse of the practice by means of rape and other types of corruption. Three stories which resonate with readers from all ages are “Boys” by Rick Moody, “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and “Lust” by Susan Minot. I will be evaluating the character of Sheila Mant; she is self-indulgent and rude. First, she only talks about herself and how somebody said she should be a model. That is very self-indulgent because when you talk about how somebody said you should be a model it is like saying that you are the prettiest. It is selfish and cocky to say how somebody else thinks you are beautiful when you are on a date.…

The title of the story gives the impression that it's an instruction guide but further into the reading the story it's the complete opposite. Díaz tells about a teenage boy living in an urban area and his struggles, trying to hide his cultural upbringing to “white girls” and “halfies” to have a chance with them. We all laughed about it like I was kidding, but the truth was, ever since I was young I dreamt of coming to University and meeting guys who all looked like the lead male role of a Rom-Com film and they were perfectly going to balance study and a social life like I was going to. I was going to meet the perfect one and we would grow old together telling tales to our grandchildren on how we fell in love at University when we met eyes from across the library and he slipped me a note with his cell phone number on it. From my findings I am led to believe their social awkwardness begins their mutation. In middle school everyone is in state of social insecurity, but unfortunately the Hopeless Romantic does not progress any further form this stage. The high consumption of books causes this blockage of evolution. They only know how to communicate with the books they read. Which means when they are ready for relationships they have under-developed social skills prohibiting them from making connections.…
