The 2007 film written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, chronicles the life of a teenage girl who, after one night and a chair, discovers that she is pregnant. Juno MacGuff is a quirky, off-beat teenager who doesn’t really care about what others think of her. When she finds out that she is pregnant, she knows that she isn’t ready to be a mother, but isn’t sure how to feel about her most recent dilemma. After talking to the baby’s father who happens to be her best friend, Paulie Bleeker, they both decide that it would be a better idea to get an abortion. However, Juno ultimately decides that she can’t go through with it. So, she decides to give the baby up for adoption instead. She tells her dad and step-mom about the unwanted pregnancy …show more content…
When Juno is at school, she is stared at and made fun of. Before she got pregnant, Juno was practically invisible to the rest of the student body, but once she becomes “convex”, as she puts it, people start paying attention to her. When she walks down the hall at the beginning of the movie, she is pushed around and isn’t noticed, but later, the student body splits like the Red Sea to make room for her. Not only is she given dirty looks, but she became the new school gossip overnight. At track practice, Bleeker is asked about the alleged pregnancy by one of his teammates. After Juno backs out of the abortion, she knows that she has to tell her father and step-mom, but is really worried about it. Her step-mom takes the news pretty well, going straight into helping Juno get doctors appointments taken care of. Juno’s dad, on the other hand, is very torn up about the news. He feels as if he has failed as a parent to his child and often makes jokes about the situation by calling Juno a big, puffy version of herself and thanking Vanessa for letting his ‘irresponsible daughter over’ at her house. Despite his hard exterior, her father truly cares for and loves Juno, “You know I’ll always be her to love and support you, no matter what kind of pickle you’re in.” In public, Juno gets mixed reactions about her pregnancy. While at the mall is judged for being young and pregnant. You mostly notice this from the looks she gets from the people in the background of the scene. However, when she is at Mark and Vanessa’s talking about the adoption, all the adults treat her as if she is an adult as well. They don’t talk down to her like most adults would in this situation, but they talk to her as an equal, despite all her jokes and

There is often a large dispute over abortion and when personhood begins. Some believe it is at fertilization, some think that it is a vague concept, and some believe that it is when the child is born. The common argument against abortion is the claim that the fetus is a person and therefore has a right to life. A philosopher, Judith Jarvis Thomson, believes that even if personhood begins at the stage of being a fetus, there are still times when it is moral to abort the fetus. She believes that personhood begins at a vague time, however she wants to prove even if the fetus is a person, she can provide times when it is still morally permissible to have an abortion.…

Juno doesn’t react the way one would expect her to in any situation in the movie. Juno finds herself pregnant; in that situation most teens would be distraught, or scared at minimum. Juno, on the other hand, seems incredibly calm. “She assesses her problem, and weighs her response to it, with disconcerting sang-froid.” (Scott).…

Even though Juno’s initial perception of Mark and Vanessa was false, the situation still had a good outcome. There is a funny scene at the end where Vanessa is holding her newborn son for the first time and she asks Juno’s step-mom “How do I look?” Juno’s step-mom replies “Like a new mom, scared shitless.” (Reitman, 2007) Vanessa’s non verbal communication said it all. She was scared.…

Marquis wrote that the standard argument against abortion is that life begins at the moment of conception or that fetuses resemble babies or that fetuses possess characteristics such as genetic code that is necessary and sufficient for being a human. He wrote that anti-abortionists think that these claims are quite obviously true and establishing any of the claims above is enough to show that abortion is morally equal to murder. He stated that a good argument concerning abortion requires not only some claim characterizing fetuses but also some overall moral principle that links a characteristic of fetuses to having the right to life. Marquis’ objections which he raised against the standard anti-abortionist view is that it is too broad. Marquis…

The film Juno, a comedy recorded in 2007, by director Jason Reitman, is about a high school student, Juno MacGuff, who is 16 years old and discovers that she is pregnant by her friend Paulie Bleeker. The movie is told over those nine months of her pregnancy, her options and decisions about keeping the baby or having an abortion, and how her plans unravel as she talks and interacts to all the people in her life, including later the couple she chooses to give the child to. This Oscar winning screenplay displayed teenage pregnancy in a more positive way, as much as they could, which had never been attempted by the movie or TV show industries. Juno created a change not only on the view of teenage pregnancy but also a new idea about gender roles and issues. This movie is also one of the first ones to deal with a teenage pregnancy this efficiently when it comes to a decision and telling her parents, since she immediately took the mature route instead of thinking her life was over and was…

Abortion is the planned termination of a human pregnancy. Several philosophers and activists have argued over if it is permissible. The author of A Defense of Abortion, Judith Jarvis Thomson, is correct about her argument that abortion is permissible even if the fetus is a person. This is because a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, which, combined with the woman’s own right to life, takes precedent over a fetus’s right to life. Even if people claim that she gave the fetus permission to be there, she should not be forced into going against her right to bodily autonomy.…

One of the most controversial issues discussed in modern times is the issue of abortion. On March, 31th as a way to bring light to this topic, the student organization Pointers for Life hosted a debate between members of the pro-life and pro-choice community. Standing on the pro-life side of the argument was Isaac Fleming, a member of the organization Wisconsin Right to Life. On the pro-choice side was Eliza Cussen, a member of NARAL Wisconsin, a pro-choice advocacy group. While attending this debate I choose to pick one speaker’s argument to evaluate from the beginning.…

Iconography throughout the Coming-of-Age subgenre plays a major role in how the films plot plays out. Three key elements of the genre’s iconography are music, emotional pull and being visually realistic. In terms of music, the coming-of-age subgenre includes dramatic emphasized music that makes moments specifically climatic. For example, in the final dramatic scene of The Spectacular Now, when Sutter finally realizes who he has become as a mature adult, he explains that he is just trying to live in “the now”. The song Wild Nights, by Snakes!Snakes!Snakes! dramatically plays as Sutter narrates is college essay, followed by Sutter driving off into the daylight to visit Aimee.…

Abortion is a growing controversial issue in the world today, mainly in the United States. “Abortion is one the most common medical performed in the United States each year” (Suzann, 1). The issue has become more prominent as years’ progress for a variety of reasons, to include the fact that the “traditional” family’s existence is fading. Abortion became legalized during the Roe v Wade case in 1973, now a little over one million abortions are performed each year. A Defense of Abortion is an article written by Judith Jarvis Thomson about the reasons why women that are pregnant have the right and should have ability to perform an abortion if they choose to do so. Judith gives reasons and examples to why women have the right to abort the fetus if they want to do so. I completely disagree with his arguments. I firmly believe that a fetus has just as much as a right to life, then the mother that is birthing the child. First off, we must define when exactly a fetus is a human being.…

An ethical dilemma is a complex situation that challenges our moral values and beliefs. We are presented with choices/options each day, and our decision to pick one option over the other is usually based on our ethical stance, beliefs, and values.
