Junket Argumentative Essay

Congressmen go to junkets and to some it may seem for personal luxury. Many Congressmen however argue that these junkets are mandatory. They use these junkets to investigate an area to see if a bill is needed and catch up on current events. Some of them could be true to their words. However, some of these trips look controversial. The ultimate problem with these junkets is that it ruins the reputation of the government in the public’s eye. Congress would function better if they fix the current junket problem. Watchdog groups, or nonprofit groups that monitor the activities of the government, pushed for the Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to suspend junkets. My alternative solution is that Congressmen should send their aides and personal staff …show more content…
When 600,000 Americans became unemployed in January 2009, everyone in the House and the Senate got around a $5,000 raise in their salaries (Williamson). It is clearly not fair that when the country is struggling economically, the government uses the money for themselves. This further hurts the public view on the government, and they can further argue that they are in an unfair situation where they have to use their money while the government does not. Sending personal staff instead fixes this problem by reducing the chances of foreign companies covering the expense of the junkets. This in turn makes the government pay for the junkets themselves. Forty two members of Congress were reported to be involved in a $750,000 junket to Azerbaijan that were fully paid for by an oil company named SACAR (Clines). Some of these junkets are paid for by powerful companies like SACAR, so these trips are covered for the politicians, not to mention all the gifts received. Although there are regulation rules that does not allow interest groups and others to pay for these trips and offer gifts, loopholes are being used constantly. This definitely causes stir in the public because while they have to pay for taxes and basic needs to live, the politicians are getting free trips and gifts. Sending the aides instead reduces these loopholes and makes the government pay for themselves. Making the politicians pay seems more justified and fair considering how much money the government did not use on these

Official take it down thus making Winnit mad, so he files a lawsuit demanding to put it back up. The District court ruled in favor of the officials saying that it wasn’t a violation of freedom of exercise of religion, and if the troll was kept would act as government speech, which is a violation of the First Amendment. Economical The VA is infamous for misappropriation of funding, which stems from two main sources: management flaws and lack of accountability. One of the most notable incidents of mismanagement causing extreme funding waste is the “$6.1 million” the House Committee on Veterans Affairs found the VA Human Resources Department (HR) wasted on two conferences in Orlando, and of this 6.1 million “$97,906” contributed to frivolous promotional items. The financial heads of the VA failed to keep a watchful eye over the VA HR department, which only lead to the described misappropriation. Furthermore, management flaws lead to an unreasonable increase in conference expenditures. This funding has gone into construction projects that are either overly extravagant for a government facility or costing “$1.5 billion” due to neglectful delays according to the Government Accountability office (Devine).…

America’s federal bureaucracy system is made up of hundreds and even thousands of government employees who are entrusted to handle the day-to-day operations of the federal government. Modern bureaucracy can be compared to horse pulling a large wagon with vigor and strength. Once the wagon of bureaucracy has started it is hard for it to stop. It is up to the citizens and elected officials in Congress to stop this wagon. The current form holding bureaucracy accountable can be found through bureaucracy accountability, reengineering of government, and ethical responsibility.…

In the 2015-2016 election cycle, political action committees (PACs) raised $1.4 billion to aid presidential and congressional campaigns; the majority of that money is non-traceable and does not come with a name tag attached (Federal Election Commission). After the landmark Supreme Court Case of Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission, American politicians have been under fire for their cloak and dagger tactics to raise money for their political parties and election campaign finances. In the controversial 2010 decision, the Supreme Court decided in favor of the Citizens United PAC to allow them to freely broadcast a 90 minute political documentary about Hillary Clinton 30 days prior the primary election. This overturned the Bipartisan…

One of the most important powers of congress is that of Congressional Oversight. While the public may only notice their congress when they are in session debating on important laws that is not the end of their duty as representatives of their constituencies. The members of congress have the responsibility to uphold and regulate different federal agencies (Halchin 2012). This is an important role when it comes to the checks and balance system. Basically, through congressional oversight, Congress can make sure that the laws that are passed are enacted and regulated.…

I've always wondered why entertainers and athletes get paid more than doctors, lawyers, military personnel, etc. I disagree, I think that people who actually make an impact on our country should get a higher salary than people who just entertain us. I think it is unfair for military personnel and doctors to get paid only 30 to 60 thousand a year while actors and actresses get paid 300 thousand a year. I will explain a bit more in the next few paragraphs. The first reason I disagree is because the people that keep us safe and make sure we are healthy are paid very little while actors, singers, etc get a bigger annual salary just to act in a movie or sing one song.…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

The symptom is "Government disservice." A new report with this diagnosis is particularly timely as Congress again toys with the American public and its workforce with another threat to shut down the government. The title of the report, "Government Disservice," by the Partnership for Public Service, aptly describes what Congress does when it leads the country to the brink of a shutdown, as it is doing now, or worse, as was the case two years ago when a partial shutdown closed many government operations for 16 days. Republican opposition to federal funding for Planned Parenthood could result in government workers being sent home and offices closing their doors after the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.…

I am not against these jobs, but I feel more could be done with the salaries that are paid to these individuals. There are other work fields that are more serious and even harder than being an athlete or movie star. Being a movie star is not an overnight process, just going to an audition can’t guarantee you a job on the spot. Most movie stars had to start off with an agent.…

Hungry for Change Why is it that law mandates public school meals have a minimum calorie intake, but not a maximum? This owes itself to the fact that when nutrition standards were established for public schools, it was to solve the problem of undernourishment.
