ABSTRACT
Junk food tastes good, but the negative effects on physical health last much longer. Junk foods have become a prominent feature of the diet of youngsters, especially in the developing country. Based on this survey, 98.9% of medical students were aware of the definition of commercially available junk foods while only 6.9% were aware of the presence of Trans fatty acid in the junk foods. 11.6% of students were unaware of the fact that artificially added phosphate, in the form of a preservative, is routinely added in processed soft drinks. However, 48.4% of them were interested to obtain phosphate-related information, and thereby minimizing the consumption of processed food and soda drinks. ---% of the students like to consume pizza, burgers, ---- % like to have fried chicken, --- % showed eagerness to eat chips, popcorns along with carbonated soft drinks. ----% choose the fast foods based on their taste, ----% prefer because of its cost is cheaper. ----% of the young medicos choose the fast food restaurants because of the hygiene, ---- % choose because of taste, ----% choose because of branded shops. However, students prefer to eat chips while in theaters (---- %), sitting in front of the TV (---- %).
Figure 4 shows the assessment of impact of commercialization of junk foods. -%mentioned Rs. 500 spent per week and ---% expressed Rs.200 spent per week ---% said less than Rs.--------- per week. ------% expressed the advertisements created a maximum interest in consuming junk foods and carbonated soft drinks. ---% mentioned that they buy for their friends. ---------------------------
Figure 5 shows the assessment of health education among young medical students. ---% noticed the ingredients on the label occasionally and most of them were not noticed. ----% expressed that they won`t allow the patients to eat and ---% showed interest to attend health education could be started from the school level to create awareness among children. ----% were not interested to attend any lectures and only---% showed interest to attend lectures.
