With the plentiful volunteer opportunities at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, I am provided the ability to transform this feeling into reality. In addition, the opportunities being offered enables me to give back to the community that I grew up in my entire life. Furthermore, my father has worked in the medical field as a pharmacist for quite a long time; his devotion to his work inspired me to become an orthopedic surgeon or cardiologist when I exit high school. Therefore, the volunteering opportunities

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

I am interested in volunteering at California Hospital Medical Center because it offers me experience I can not get anywhere else. As a minor in college pursuing a career in medicine, it is difficult to find a hospital that will allow me to watch the different specialities in medicine. At California Hospital Medical Center, I can watch doctors do what they are best at, and see the difference they make first hand. Additionally, California Hospital Medical Center offers a variety of services, and it is close to my college. Getting to California Hospital Medical Center will not take long, and I can get there by public transportation.…

My interest towards attending Mercer University’s Physician Assistant is largely due to the emphasis the University puts on service to humankind through service learning and integrating volunteering. Being a founding institution that ingrains service to humanity entirely into its culture and academics, there is no doubt that Mercer would provide me with an exceptional opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of a Physician Assistant providing whole person care to members of the community. Having worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in an underserved community, Kewaunee, Wisconsin, for some time now, I thoroughly understand how important providing effective care to those in need really is. During my experience I witnessed the appalling living conditions that many patients were surrounded by and how difficult accessing healthcare service was for them, thus enforcing medical illnesses to be even more likely to occur among them. I have personally observed how appreciative and grateful many of the patients and the families of the patients were when…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…

“Ok tilt a little towards me, and open just a bit wider,” I heard my father say to his patient as I peered behind the corner of the operating room. To the soft hum of a high-speed drill, I scanned the room looking at X-Rays depicting luminescent teeth, and watched as the assistant handed my dad instruments repeatedly like a well-oiled machine. My daze was interrupted by the cool splash of a water syringe on my face telling me it was time to leave. When I was five, this antic was cute to the patients sitting in the dental chair and my father as well. As my age increased, my cuteness declined, however, my intrigue did not.…
