Junior Bookkeeper

As a junior bookkeeper at a small firm in New Jersey, I have seen and noticed every little thing that has been happening around the office. The firm that I am working at consists of seven people: the owner of the company, three full-fledged bookkeepers, an administration, one intern, and me, the junior bookkeeper. Our company specializes on doing the books of small businesses around New Jersey and New York. Additionally, the bookkeepers are expected to answers all the questions of the clients and our boss in a 24-hour window. Basically, our job is to do the books of the clients including and not limited to paying their bills, running their payroll, etc. and at the same time meet their and our boss’ over the top and sometimes impossible demands. …show more content…
Rumors and distrust among my colleagues are prevalent and these are mostly directed to our boss. If someone would ask my coworkers what kind of employer our boss is, they would describe the owner as temperamental, ungrateful, selfish, and other things that I cannot include on a college-level paper. How serious are these accusations? Well, our boss opened the business three years ago, and among the employees from the first year, only one still remains. This employee works as a part-time bookkeeper for three days a week and admits that he/she cannot and will not work as a full timer because of the stress that our boss gives us. Others either last only for a year or walk out on their very first day and decide not to come back because of the same reason.
The descriptions above of my employer seem more like a managment issues, and not an ethical dilemma. So how does my boss’s actions related to ethical dilemma? Well, since ethics is “[t]he application of moral or ethical norms to business”, then the issues pertaining to my boss fit the criteria of an ethical dilemma. Yes, the system works but it definitely needs improvement. However, our employer refuses to listen to others’ opinions because he/she thinks that his/her way works and changing the system would throw off the work balance that we have. The third application is the industry.professions association that “affect the … member discipline.” The belief and behavior of our employer definitely have an effect to my colleagues discipline. At first, they were eager to do better at their jobs and produce good results, but now it is different. My coworkers think that it is not worth putting a lot of effort on their work especially that they are not recognized by our employer.
Hill talks about how Christians ought to reflect God’s character. As Christians, “we need to [be Holy, just and loving]” since God is always like these. These characteristics are not present in my workplace. My coworkers think that our employer is a bad leader. Their actions and the way they talk about our boss behind her back are indications that love is nowhere to be found in the
