It was silent. No one wanted to say a word. The only sound that could be heard were the engines of the boat and the walloping noise of the waves crashing against the boats. Today’s the 6th of June, 1944. This is supposed to be a glorious day for the allies. I should feel honored and privileged to be a part of this monumental amphibious assault, but the feeling of fear and trepidation are setting in as the cracking sounds of gun shots approached. The boats suddenly stopped and someone screamed “GET IN THE WATER, GET IN THE WATER NOW! Suddenly soldiers got shot before they could even get in the water while some of those who did made it couldn’t swim. All of my allies were dropping like flies. I locked in on the beach and moved quickly trying to push my body to the limit. It felt like such a great distance to travel and the bullets zipping past my head were moving in slow motion. The deafening sounds on explosions growing as I finally touched land and found cover behind a hill of sand. There was a medic trying to help out a poor guy who took a shot through the side of neck, but he couldn’t make it. The only thing that could happen is charging up further onto the beach. Emerging from the rocks and running closer to the enemy bunkers where zipping noises of guns continued on. Slowly and slowly after trading gun fire the all of us were beginning to reach their bunkers. I took cover for a moment to catch my breath and popped out again to receive bullet that ripped through my skin and straight through my calf from an unseen location. Someone quickly grabbed me when I hit went crippling to the ground. Never have I felt such pain that made me scream out in agony. The soldier who pulled me out carried me further back into safer cover so a medic could help my
