Compare and Contrast Essay During the regionalism and naturalism writing movement, authors like Bret Harte and Mark Twain, were able to use regionalistic qualities to create stories that captured imaginations of readers living in the East, Midwest, and South. The similarities and differences between the stories’ characters, narrators, and themes will show the characteristics of regionalism writing and how two different authors can use the same foundation to create different yet similar stories.…

An anonymous person once stated, “Good people bring out the good in other people.” Personally, I believe that truer words could never be said. This quote applies to every single aspect of life, because there are always people around us to make it true. And those in “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”, a short narrative by Bret Harte, are no exception to this form of natural law. In fact, the main idea of this exemplum was that even people who have done bad things can still have a little bit of hidden goodness inside of them, especially when they surround themselves with other good people.…

The setting is pretty general, but there is really no need for it to be specific. The setting plays a key role in this story, because she struggles with her Chinese heritage as an American citizen living in the United States. The setting acts as an antagonist because her Chinese heritage causes her to feel out of place in her birthplace. California is the main contributor to the conflict, because there probably wouldn't be a conflict if she was born over in China to begin…

Heroes typically have the characteristics of being strong and fearless. The ancient hero Gilgamesh had these ideals in the story the Epic of Gilgamesh, written in Western Asia in 2000 B.C.E. Even though these ideals are present, they are not as evident in the hero Harry Potter from J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series written in the 21st century. However, in almost every book, no matter what the culture or time period are, the same basic themes of character traits, power and death recur.…

I haven't read either book so it may be hard for me to compare them to my example that I think comes close to yours. The movie Trouble with the Curve. The setting and 'world' defining plot aspects of all three is major league baseball. Clint Eastwood as the grizzled baseball scout and Amy Adams as his beautiful tomboy (highly successful lawyer) daughter were great actors to make this movie charming, interesting, and believable. A particular plot element that explained a lot and moved the story forward was finding out that Amy Adam's character Mickey had lost her mother at a young age.…

The Pied Piper Arnold Friend, diversely known as Charles Schmid or “The Pied Piper of Tuscon,” in the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” is a serial killer who has a name for himself. Throughout his life, Charles Schmid manages to kill three teenage girls from 1964 to 1965 by beguiling them to him by altering his appearance and intriguing his victims by his persuasive choice of words . In 1966, Joyce Carol Oates found inspiration to write ,“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,” in a Life Magazine starring Schmid’s manslaughter case in one of the pages. The author does have a great emphasis on setting. The character, Hannah, has a map that guides her listeners through the town to each place where every story occurred. Her tapes included a map with special markings throughout the town. I think she wanted her listeners to walk in her shoes as well as listen to her stories. The way the author introduces these places, I believe that these places may exist, particularly everywhere!…

A short story is an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot. When you as the reader analyze these findings among your contemporary or modern selections, you find that the authors and producers had much to compare and contrast as they each had their own special devices used in the stories, and differences and similarities between the works.
