Jumper Down, 'How To Set A House On Fire'

Improved Essays
Short stories are a great way to escape into literature, without having to spend hours on end reading. I’ve recently heard about your hate against the idea of all short-short stories, not only did I find that tremendously disappointing but I cannot seem to comprehend. Seeing as I am taking a short story class at the moment really surprises me, not only can short stories spark a reader but it can show them different aspects of writing longer novels cannot. A few stories I will recall are “Sleeping” written by Katharine Weber, “How to Set a House on Fire” written by Stace Budzko, and “Jumper Down” written by Don Shea. Through this collection of short stories I have pulled together these three different fictional works are consistently swift, …show more content…
This story was very powerful and complex due to different factors. This story is told as basic instructions on how to burn down a house step by step. Not only do we not why this is happening, but we are also not sure who’s doing this. I love how the author uses many descriptive images, which are able to produce a very clear image of what’s really happening in the readers head to actually make you picture the scene. In the story is states “On your way toss your house keys into the water well. Before doing anything else, make a wish. After filling the birdbath next to the old red maple with the remaining octance, call Herm up at the fire station. After he gets on the line tell him to come over and bring a truck or two-with a crew. There’s not much to see now, really. (Budzko 46) Not only does this quote create a very descriptive imagine, but it shows how powerful the author really wants to make this story. As I read this story the only think I could think about was why this happening is. This story would never impact the reader as much as it does if it was a normal story not only because its so short, but because listing events like this would get boring if it was done any longer. This story also leaves the reader with a powerful opinion when the author states “After the windows kicked out there wasn’t much anyone could have done. And after Herm asks if you would do it …show more content…
We are told the story of Henry a jumper up expert (paramedic), who is retiring, but on his last shift he is accompanied by one last jumper. Henry is known as the best jumper up due to the fact that he is “superb at talking them down. Of all the paramedics I worked with, he had the touch.” (Shea 17) This quote explains how Henry is great at what he does, not only does this show he was the best, but it shows that he possessed something no one else did which is why he is able to help so many people. Seeing as we know he is the best at what he does really helps us pave the way for the rest of the story. As Henry is accompanied by his last jump, he sees something he sees an act that has never been done before, in the story it explains “It looked like a circus act. No exaggeration. Two half gainers and a backflip, and every second of it caught in the spotlights. (Shea 17) Hearing the description of how this man jumped really opens a picture in the readers head of these events actually happening. After this fatal fall Henry walks over to the man and states “I know you can hear me, cause hearing’s the last thing to go. I just gotta tell ya, I wanted you to know, that jump was fucking magnificent!” (Shea 19) This is another plot twist because no one expects this at all, not only are we expecting Henry to yell at the man but we never expect him to

In Norman Maclean’s text, Young Men and Fire, the reader is revealed an emotional and heart-wrenching tale of 13 smokejumpers that lose their lives on a seemingly ordinary day of wildfire fighting. The choice of recounting this tale in a Greek-story format shows us the academic, intellectual prowess of Maclean and his want to not only talk about the historical facts and testimony, but to meet the reader in his heart and express emotions that fill the empty factual spaces. Maclean says, “A storyteller, unlike a historian, must follow compassion wherever it leads him. He must be able to accompany his characters, even into smoke and fire, and bear witness to what they thought and felt even when they themselves no longer knew.” Throughout the text, we constantly see examples of Maclean’s complete and utter obsession over this event, and how that drives him in a relentless pursuit of the truth about what happened.…

“Stories for nighttime and some for the day” is a collection of fantasy short stories written by Ben Loory. This book contains 40 short stories and of them all, my personal favorites are “The Book”, “UFO: A Love Story”, and “The Snake in the Throat”. “The Book” is a story about a woman who goes insane about a book she had bought that she claimed had no writing in it. After not being able to return the book, she went on an absolute rampage as she sees other people reading it, and it becoming a best seller. This bothered her so much that she ranted on the television, radio show, and even wrote her own book about it.…

Food: the most necessary supplement to life. There are few experiences that can best biting into a perfectly grilled steak, or savoring the first bite of a warm apple pie. In times of low energy, these dishes and many others step up perfectly to reinvigorate the tired person. Why, then, for most of history, has food been consumed raw? In “The Leap,” the narrator recaps on her mother’s past as a circus performer to give her daughter the heroic gift of life. The mother had been through a lot before having her first child die. On October 8, 1871 a fire broke out that caused much misfortune and destruction to the city of Chicago. While the true cause of the fire is unknown, there are things that are well documented such as some reasons why the fire got so big so quickly, the effects the fire had, and the aftermath of the fire. The Great Chicago Fire was a large fire that burned out of control because many mistakes were made that lead to horrible consequences that would bring many changes to the society. One of the first reasons the fire burned out of control was because people did not report the fire. One man in particular refused to give out the key to the alarm box saying that a fire truck had already passed.…

The hate and bitterness of his “snarl” is the final implication as to how the Misfit feels about religion (O’Connor 645). Bellamy insists that the reason for the devilish message in the Misfit’s speech is due to his mission to play to role of the Anti-Christ. Bellamy asserts that, “The central message of the Misfit’s sermon, for a sermon is what his remarks amount to, is a familiar one in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction; there is no middle ground between absolute belief in Christ’s messianic fiction and a belief that like is nasty, brutish, and short,” (200). Katherine Feeley notes that the Misfit “embodies all reason and no faith,” which is the opposite of the faith-based personality of the grandmother (202). As Madison Jones remarks, the Misfit “may be haunted, at times tormented, by vision of Christ raising the dead, but he cannot believe it: he was not there.…

Henry’s path to “greatness” was a long and rough one, and although he wasn’t a true hero until the end of the book, he did exhibit some heroic qualities earlier in the novel. For example, when Henry was injured and bedridden, he took a chance and elected to have his operation performed immediately. Any other soldier would have been thrilled if he had the chance to stay in bed for six months far away from the war, but Henry wouldn’t have it. This showed a certain amount of bravery and integrity as most soldiers wouldn’t have made any effort to come back at all. “I am very tired of this war.…

    A New Leaf Analysis

There are many different elements to use in order to properly evaluate short stories. These elements include plot, character, point of view, and theme. Not only do these elements help the reader understand the story, it also allows the reader to be able to classify a short story as either commercial or interpretative fiction. When evaluating, it is important to pay attention to all aspects of the story as different interpretations can not only switch the meaning of the story, but also give the reader the wrong message that the author was trying to give. Although it may not always be an easy task as a reader to interpret stories, it is vital in being able to have a better understanding.…

This short story anthology is a collection of stories, which show step by step plot driven stories that follow traditional plot, but also being bad and dark, leaving the reader with a disturbing image, which does not replicate what many short stories are written about today. The stories I choose to include in my anthology are: “Where are you going Where have you been” by Joyce Carol Oates, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, “The Other Place” by Mary Gaitskill, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’brien, “Jumper Down” by Don Shea, “Jens” by Ross Nervig and Encounters with the Unexpected Animals” by Anthony Johnson. All these stories share a dark element within them making them all connect, leaving a perfect fit for this anthology.…

My most valuable possession was my house. It wasn’t anything fancy or exquisite, but it was there that I had spent the precious moments, however few, with my beloved dad. I remember that we would spend hours playing, running around the arched, brightly lit corridors. On either side, I recall the large mahogany doors which would fluidly open to reveal ancient, chestnut-brown rooms with antique, twin bed frames which were confined within. I will never forget the uncanny gargoyles that were suspended onto the wall behind, the very same monsters who would assault my sleep and curse me with countless numbers of sleepless nights.…
