The chest protector is a hard shell, made up of plastic. Its job is to protect the chest and back bones and underlying organs. Broken ribs would be far more common without chest protectors. The chest protector provides shock absorption and a protective layer between the rider and the ground. It additionally protects the rider from what’s called a ‘roost’, this is the debris that is thrown at a rider from the rider in front of them. Some newer chest protectors are made to fit under the jersey so you don’t see it. Sadly some riders were not wearing chest protectors because they didn’t like the way they looked. By focusing on ‘looking cool’, some riders overlook the deeper problem of risking the safety of their bodies.
