What is World War I? World War I, also known as the Great War, is a bloody war that swallows up Europe. The war began on July 28th, 1914, and ended in November 11th, 1918, which lasted for four years. It is estimated that there were 10 million military deaths and 20 million were injured. Why is World War I important? It’s important because it changes how each country negotiate and there are many countries that are involved in this war. There are many incidents that leads to World War I, which includes the assassination of the Archduke of Austria and his wife, alliances, militarism, imperialism and nationalism, altogether known as the July Crisis. In the assassination in Sarajevo incident, the Serbian shot an Austrian, but why other countries, like Germany and France, were involved in the war? Most of the European countries were involved in the war because of the alliances they had formed with each other, which they promised to support each other if the war was upon them. Before World War I, there were the Triple Alliance, which consists of Germany, Austro-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, which consists of Britain, France and Russia. It’s also a desire by a large group of people that forms a group to be independent or to be on their own. There were countries that were under control by the empires. Of course they wanted to be free and be independent because when these countries are under the empire, they also get the culture from the empire, which is maybe different from their own culture, so they protested. There are two main types of protesting, protesting quietly, and fight for it, so there’s a fight between the empire and the small group that wanted to fight for freedom. A good example for this is the assassination of the Archduke in Sarajevo, it is caused by a small group of people that fight for freedom when the others protested quietly. In conclusion, I think the main reason that contributed to the outbreak of World War One are the MAIN, which is militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism and the assassination didn’t played a big role to the outbreak of the Great War because it’s just a problem between two countries at first, and like what this man said, "No one in particular started the war." So, it’s impossible to blame that the person who killed the Archduke, Gavrilo Princip, is the person who started the war. But people think differently, maybe it’s Princip who started the war, maybe it’s not, no one
