In 69 B.C his wife, Cornelia passed away however two years later he married a relative of Pompey named Pompeia. Unfortunately, they divorced just a few years later. Even through out these difficult trials and obstacles, Julius Caesars military life still prospered. In 61-60 B.C he took the role as governor of the Roman province of Spain. Furthermore, with his relationship with Pompey he was also able to get elected as consul in 59 B.C. As Julius Caesar continued his rise to power he also began a close relationship with Marcus Licinius Crassus. Crassus was another Roman General and thought to be one of the wealthiest men in Roman history. Although Caesars and Crassus’s relationship was growing, a bit of rivalry began to arise between Crassus and Pompey. However, Caesar a great negotiator was able to convince them both that they would work out better as allies rather than enemies. One of Caesar’s most controversial steps was when he attempted to pay Pompey’s soldiers in return for public lands and even though this move was very controversial he eventually got what he wanted.
