The devices were heavily used during Brutus’ and Antony’s speeches at Caesar’s funeral. Brutus uses all three devices: logos, ethos, and pathos. Using logos, he tries to prove his point by appealing to the citizen’s own wellbeing, mentioning how Caesar was murdered for the good of the country. He also uses pathos, trying to demonstrate that he genuinely cared for the plebian’s thoughts and concerns. Finally, he uses ethos by grouping himself with the plebians.
Antony also uses the rhetorical devices. He applies the ethical side of the argument heavily, knowing that the people care about themselves and how the change affects them. He also uses logos when he provides examples of why Brutus and his companions were wrong to kill Caesar. For both of these, the reading of the will solidifies Antony’s argument, which in turn pushes the people onto his side.
Overall, this play was alright, though it is not one I would read again willingly. I don’t know why exactly the play continued after Act III since Caesar was dead. The conflict and betrayal between the living parties were somewhat amusing, as Cassius played Brutus and then the two got played by Antony. The language was hard to understand at times and the multiple monologues began to grow quite tedious to read. At times, the play was difficult the follow, but after reading it a few times, one was able to get a general idea of what was
