Many people are eligible to be a good leader but one bad quality can ruin it. Caesar, Antony, and Brutus demonstrate throughout Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, what qualities make up a good leader. Intelligence, honesty, and respect are just some of the qualities that can make up a good leader. Antony and Brutus prove that they’re good leaders by their actions. On the other hand, Caesar is not a good leader. One might be surprised that Caesar isn’t a good leader because the people of Rome want him to become king but his careless actions get him killed. During Caesar’s funeral, Antony gives a speech, following Brutus. During his speech he uses emotions to win over the people of Rome. Antony brings up that he has Caesar’s will but will not read it. He makes such a big deal out of not sharing the will with the people and he says “I fear I wrong the honorable men whose daggers have stabbed Caesar. I do fear it,” (3.2 150-151). By Antony reading the will, he has now proven to the crowd that Caesar cared for the good of Rome and he was not like how the conspirators have described him. Antony manipulates the crowd by playing with their emotions, which can be a good quality of a leader. Antony is intelligent in convincing the crowd that Caesar was a good man but he is also seen as a very powerful man. While Cassius and Brutus decide whether or not to allow Marc Antony to speak at Caesar’s funeral, Cassius says “I think it is not meet Mark Antony, so well beloved of Caesar, should outlive Caesar,” (2.1 162-164). He doesn’t want Marc Antony to speak at Caesar’s funeral because he doesn’t want him to “outlive” Caesar. This proves that Marc Antony has a lot of power.
