[intro] This is shown through the main characters and their action throughout Julius Caesar. The main characters have certain traits, such as loyalty, naivety, and emotion. The play’s protagonist, Brutus, is the most manipulated character in the play. This is due to his loyalty. In the beginning of the play, it’s clear that Brutus is extremely loyal to Rome. This devotion is integral to the plot, for better or for worse. Cassius feeds off of this trait by using it to convince him to join the conspiracy. He appeals to him by saying, “‘Brutus’ and ‘Caesar’: what should be in that ‘Caesar’? / Why should that name be sounded more than yours? / Write them together: yours is as fair a name” (I.ii.142-144). One of these manipulators was Antony, whose facades and cunning words launched him into power once Caesar died. At Caesar’s funeral, he manages to turn the entire crowd against Brutus in a matter of minutes. Prior to Antony’s speech, Brutus gave his speech about the reasons why Caesar had to be killed. Brutus states, “Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than / That Caesar were dead, to live all free men? As Caesar loved / Me, I weep for him. As he was fortunate, I rejoice at it. As / He was valiant, I honor him. But, as he was ambitious, I slew him” (III.ii.22-25). Brutus truthfully explains why Caesar had to be murdered. Here he asks the citizens if they would rather be free or slaves. Then Brutus adds he admired Caesar, but he had to be killed because he had too much ambition. As Brutus’s speech comes to an end, the citizens of Rome want him to become the next Caesar and be celebrated.
