Julius Caesar Hero Or Villain Essay

Throughout Julius Caesar, the hero and the villain change. The villain and hero change from scene to scene and act to act. A hero is someone who is looked up to, admired, and someone that others strive to be. A villain is someone whose actions are considered evil and cause a conflict. These two things are opposites. Is it possible for a person to fit into both categories? In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar it is. Julius Caesar himself is portrayed as both a villain and a hero in this play. In the beginning of the play he is viewed as an evil tyrant who only loves power and wants to be in control. It is perceived from the other high up officials that they have no respect for Caesar and that he has no respect for other people. After Caesar is killed, it is shown to the people of Rome that he was a good man. He left money and gardens for the people of Rome. Brutus is also looked upon as a hero and a villain. At first he seems to be a hero because he killed the malicious leader who was going to take the citizens freedom. Then when Caesar turns out to be good, Brutus is displayed as the evil man who killed the worthy king. Caesar was Brutus’s friend and he didn’t want to kill him at first. He believed that Caesar was a good man but might let the power get to his head. Cassius and the other conspirators tricked Brutus into becoming a conspirator against Caesar. The conspirators made Brutus think that Caesar needed to be killed for the good of the people. While Cassius and the others had selfish reasons for wanting to kill Caesar, like power, Brutus wanted to make sure that the people of Rome's freedom was kept intact.
