Julius Caesar Funeral Speech Essay

The two funeral speeches for Caesar At the art iii, the Caesar was killed by the conspiracy. Both of Antony and Brutus do the funeral speech with beautiful words for him, they have completely different standpoint, but I think that Antony’s speech make me find most convincing. From Brutus's speech, He said that tyranny is dead, if the Caesar become the lord, all of the Roman people will not get the freedom. All things he said is that to give freedom to the people, and said he would like to die with Caesar to made people trust he was right, and made the trust of he kill Caesar is not for the power. His idea was strong, with his feats, he made people believed he was greater than Caesar and trust he was right. Brutus catch the freedom, and kill wild ambition to explain why they killed Caesar. As Antony’s speech, he catch the benefit of the people. Instead the benefit of the spirit, he talk about the materially benefit from Caesar will give the public. And he also use the example of that Caesar quarrel with the imperial crown three times to show that Caesar is not a tyranny. That is much better than Brutus's idea, because he have a good example which a lot of people had saw it to prove his …show more content…
It is a great evidence to prove that Caesar is not a tyranny. Antony even said “I have overshot myself to tell you for it. In my opinion, Antony speech was more delivered better because includes several persuasive details in his speech. After saying that his intent wasn't to praise Caesar, he says, "He was my friend, faithful and just to me. " Antony's speech points out many of Caesar acts that had benefited them as Roman citizens. He plays with their minds saying that Caesar had been generous to them and protected them from the "intruders". He uses rhetorical questions, irony, and etc. to effectively persuade his audience to join his side instead of Brutus'.…

Antony, in his eulogy, presented himself as filled with grief and loss; however, a form of subliminal persuasion and manipulation is used to sway the Roman people in his favor. The loyal friend of Caesar appeared to be supportive of the conspirators, but his devotion to the true king never wavered. While he praised the conspirators for being “such honorable men”, Antony admitted how he grieved for his friend. He utilized paralipsis in his cajolery, stating that “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, / But here I am to speak what I do know.”…

Mark Antony fosters a strong sense of emotion in his compelling speech at Julius Caesar’s funeral to the Roman people in Act III, scene ii, lines 74-147. Antony prefaces the deliverance of his speech by calling Brutus and Cassius’ honorability into consideration, but ultimately criticizes them and ignites a fire of rage within the citizens of Rome. This scene occurs shortly after the assassination of Caesar. At this point, the Roman people hold the conspirators in high regard as the narrative of the execution is characterized as being for the benefit of the city. Throughout Antony’s speech, however, public opinion shifts dramatically against the conspirators.…

In Brutus's speech he says, "Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?" (III:ii:22-24) Brutus is hitting their emotions by saying that they would be all slaves if Caesar was still alive and ruling over Rome. This was extremely effective because he knows that none of the commoners would want to live their lives as slaves. Antony says in his speech, "Look, in his place ran Cassius' dagger through.…

Brutus delivers a speech defending his actions, and for the moment, the crowd is on his side. However, Mark Antony, with a subtle and eloquent speech, deftly turns public opinion against the assassins by manipulating the emotions of the common people. There is method in his rhetorical speech and gestures: he reminds them of the good Caesar had done for Rome, his sympathy with the poor, and his refusal of the crown at the Lupercal, thus questioning Brutus' claim of Caesar's ambition. He shows Caesar's corpse to the crowd to have them shed tears and gain sympathy for their fallen hero; and he reads Caesar's will, in which every Roman citizen would receive money. Antony rouses the mob to drive the conspirators from Rome.…

Both speeches of Brutus and Antony about Caesar’s death were compelling, but Mark Antony’s speech was overall superior to that of Brutus’s, for he won back the Roman people’s loyalty. In Brutus’s speech, he tries to invoke the people of Rome using ethos. Brutus uses ethos to credit himself, saying that the people should trust his words. The people of Rome can trust in his words because he is a part of the government, so in using ethos was an effective way on persuading the people.…

Antony further develops his argument with irony, in lines 145-146, where, while taunting the crowd with Caesar’s will, he says. “Tis good you know not that you are his heirs.” Instead of telling them outright that they are Caesar’s heirs, he pretends not to reveal the will, while he actually does. Using this technique he emphasizes what he wants them to know. By indirectly stating his…

When Brutus says “not that I loved Caesar less, but that i loved/ Rome more” (III, ii, 23-24), he is using pathos to appeal to the Plebeians through their love and loyalty to Rome, which can make them betray anyone, even Caesar, whom they loved. Brutus also uses rhetorical questions to address the audience including ”Had you rather Caesar were living, and/ die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all/ freemen” (III, ii, 24-26). This rhetorical question is used to make the Plebeians think about what is better for their life by making them choose between being free without Caesar or slaves with Caesar. Lastly, Antony uses verse format in his speech while Brutus uses prose, which make it easier to appeal to the masses by speaking the ordinary form of the…

Antony also says in his speech, “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” Through this simple statement he is proving to the simple people in the audience that his character is not one that would mess with their minds, or try to convince them of something they don’t already believe him. Now whether these statements are his true character or not is irrelevant. The audience believes his intentions and choses to follow his ideas rather than the ideas of Brutus, making him the more effective speaker in this…

In Antony’s oration, he argues his case against Brutus by using the rhetorical strategies of Ethos, Pathos and Logos to manipulate his audience to be on his side, rather than Brutus’s side.
