Throughout his time maintaining multiple positions in the government , he demonstrated many acts of mercy, initiative and skill in the army. At a young age, he joined the military, and displayed excellent ability on the battlefield. He eventually built up his own personal army. This showed that he had the capability to obtain a higher power and to eventually defeat many armies like, Pompey's’ army and the Gauls. He also showed acts of mercy, for instance; while he was sailing to Greece, he was kidnapped and held for ransom by pirates. The money they wanted was a total of 50 talents and Julius agreed politely but warned them that he would track them down. He then crucified them eventually, and as a sign of mercy, slit their throats before the crucifixion. Also, Julius showed initiative during his position as consul in 60 BC, as he passed some significant reforms. They included; giving land to poor romans, making sure military veterans had land after their service and the law against extortion, or threatening someone to get what you want. This was a good decision, since he needed to find is footing in the positions of the government after passing those laws.
