Women in Elizabethan times lived in a very patriarchal society, where men dominated and controlled life and family. Because of this, life was extremely difficult for females, even amongst the most privileged.
In Elizabethan times, women were expected to act and behave in a certain way that was dictated by men. Women were expected to obey everything said to them by a man and remain subservient to them at all times, never raising their voices or speaking out of turn.
