Juliet Lubawama, a local resident of Downingtown is recognized as one of the country’s best youth poets. So how did she get to her position? Her love for poetry began in fourth grade after listening to Phenomenal Women by Maya Angelou.
After listening to the poem, she immediately ran home and tried to compose her own interpretation of Angelou’s poem and named it the Proclamation of All Things Good. It’s a clever title that you would never expect to come from a fourth grader. From that moment, you can already see her potential and expect great things from her.

Although her parents were both originally from Uganda, her mother gave birth to her in the U.S. and she grew up in Downingtown. Her mother is a doctor while her father is a pharmaceutical researcher.
According to her, she is able to explore her own identity through her words. She often asks herself if she is an African-American or a Ugandan?
Her question is often reflected in a number of her works including one where she describes an American-Ugandan character as beginning one thing and ending in another. In another poem, she describes how her aunt straightens her hair using a hot comb. This experience is a common tradition African women from all over the world can relate to.
She hopes that one day her poetry will be able to reach and touch people who are currently in the gray area where they are not quite sure about their identities. Her poems have helped her get through her own personal journey.
