When the Friar expresses shock at Romeo’s change of heart to Juliet, Romeo responds, “‘Thee chid’st me oft for loving Rosaline.’ ‘For doting, not for loving, pupil mine.’ “And bad’st me bury love.’ ‘Not in a grave…’” (2.3.86-89). Romeo and the Friar share agapé love, and are close enough that the Friar is Romeo’s confidant for his love life and is able to tease Romeo about it. This is in sharp contrast to Romeo’s parents, who know nothing about his love life and barely communicate with him, let alone tease him. Burying love in a grave is an echo of Juliet’s words at the Capulet party, where she rashly and immaturely said that her grave would be her wedding bed if Romeo was married.
