Julie Ellzey, my grandmother, was born on December 31, 1956. She is currently 59 years old. The reason I decided to do my paper on her is because she continues to inspire me and push me to be better in every aspect of life. I learned a lot of things about my grandma that I didn’t already know before. Julie grew up in the 70s when everyone was fighting for equal rights. She was pretty young during this time. Julie was the oldest of four siblings. Unfortunately, being the oldest, she carried the most responsibility. My great grandparents would go on vacation often, causing my grandma to watch her younger siblings at the age of 9. At a young age my grandma had to learn to take care of herself and others. My grandma was affected by being a woman …show more content…
She never got in trouble until she met my grandpa. At sixteen years old Julie became pregnant with David, my father. She was just starting out senior year when she found out she was pregnant. My pawpaw asked her to marry him, and so they got married that December. When the principal of Davison High School found out that my grandma was pregnant he tried to kick her out of school. She told him, “you cannot kick me out of school! That’s illegal!” The principal then tried to make up the excuse that school would affect her health. After being told this she went to the OBGYN and demanded that her doctor write the principal a note saying she could go back to school. My great grandma was convinced that Julie had ruined her life and actually offered her to abort the baby. My grandma refused the abortion and decided to take on the challenge. She graduated high school seven months …show more content…
My pawpaw worked to support my grandma and my dad. She decided against going to school at first because she had to take care of her new baby. Julie only worked twice a week for 4 hours. She told me she liked working for those few hours a week because it got her out of the house. A few months’ pass and December rolls around, my grandpa is taking care of David while my grandma is at work. David cried so much that it drove my pawpaw crazy. He brought David to Julie’s work and said, “you need to quit your job because I cannot watch him anymore.” So that’s exactly what she did, she quit her job. She told my pawpaw that she was going to go to college if she couldn’t work and he told her, “as long as you pass the classes you can go.” Julie then applied for school and she got in. She originally went to school to study marine biology. My grandma told me that she was looking through the newspaper and didn’t see a single job offer for a marine biologist. What she did see was a high demand for nurses. Julie changed her major to nursing. At that time Julie’s graduating class was the first to earn a 4-year bachelor’s degree at South Alabama. After graduation, my grandma got a job at the hospital and she told me that it only paid $4.84. My grandpa was upset because he told me grandma that the cashiers at Winn-Dixie were making 8$ an hour and she should have just been a cashier. Julie worked for a few years and had 3 more kids: Michal, Jessica,

Reading this statement the my first understanding of the quote is defined as, having a society where “fantasies” are demanded by order and are also created by order. This might first be hard to understand but while looking through the work of Laura Mulvey we come to understand that “phantasy” is a mixture of sexual desire and self-image. Mulvey states, “During its history, the cinema seems to have evolved a particular illusion of reality in which this contradiction between libido and ego has found a beautifully complementary phantasy world.” (VP & NC pg. 308). Law is our border for our desire, the law controls what we get to experience in film, because law is the filmmakers that creates our ultimate fantasy. Mulvey states, “Sexual instincts…

In a school in Detroit a teacher by the name of Tiffani Eaton tried to stop a fight between two students by hitting both of them with a broom. Because of her actions the school fired her, the students were suspended. In my opinion her punishment was unjustified, although I can understand the other side of the coin. She did cause the students physically and mentally harm. As well as brook the schools policy by not getting security and hitting a student. However, if she did not the students and others could have been harmed more severely. If she would have got help but walky-talky failed to function and they were no security Gard’s in close proximity to her. So I think Tiffani Eaton shouldn’t have been fired.…

The nineteen-century was an era of inequality against both women, and African-Americans. Slavery was still occurring in the South in this era, and there were many who believed that providing an education to an African-American was an egregious act that had to be punished by imprisonment (Douglass,pg.36). Women were also treated as lesser then their Caucasian counterparts, and in many cases were seen as part of their husband and not as individuals (Hagler, pg.406). The mid to late 1800’s was a time of change, many in the north were already against slavery, but the mind of many in the south still had not change, but the actions of people, such as Margaret Douglass was the catalyst that was needed in order to break the boundary’s, and allow change to come. Through examining Margaret Douglass trial and D. Harland Hagler article, “The Ideal Woman in the Antebellum South: Lady or Farm Wife?”, it becomes apparent how women were seen as an extension of their husband, and not as individuals who deserved the same respect and equality.…

Professional sports players have meant a lot to the U.S. for many generations. But people nowadays think that these big, money making machines are being disrespectful to our country. People calling these men and women “traitors” or “a disgrace” or even telling them to “leave the country”. These rude comments aren’t meant to be said to every athlete. It's actually going towards Toni Smith, the then 21-year-old senior guard on the Manhattanville College women’s basketball team. She turned her back on america's flag and expressing her opinions on the 2003 Iraq War. Toni Smith did not do anything wrong and was not betraying our country because she was just saying her thoughts and feelings. She was not trying to be rude.…

The system of slavery, which brutally exploited the labour of a large and primarily Black population, shaped the history of the United States of America for over four hundred years (Davis: African Slavery, Sept 28). A primary tactic that was implemented in the system was to eliminate any motive of forming black communities by discouraging family ties. Many slaves resorted to documenting and preserving these experiences of slave cruelty through slave narratives, a genre of literature similar to autobiographies. Slave narratives can be regarded as a source that appeals to collective humanity through the complicated and multilayered acts of resistance carried out by the protagonists against their masters. By using Harriet Jacobs’ narrative entitled…

Why is it that law mandates public school meals have a minimum calorie intake, but not a maximum? This owes itself to the fact that when nutrition standards were established for public schools, it was to solve the problem of undernourishment. The majority of school aged children used to walk to school, played more outside, and were more active in sports. This resulted in children burning more calories than school meals provided. Nowadays, the problem has become over nourishment of less than ideal foods to children getting less exercise (Pollan). There have been some attempts to combat America’s problems with incorrect eating habits. In 2010, President Obama established a task force on childhood obesity. The action plan included…
