The audience Watson is addressing are those living in the South primarily the Caucasian community. This would is due to the majority his campaign supporters being African-American; the wording used in this excerpt also suggests its address farmers. Populism hoped to restore democratic and economic power back to the people and the key element was through unity and organization. Watson declares " You are made to hate each other" and seems to be implying there is an outside source for the hated between blacks and whites whether its being fueled by the government, monopolies, or both is unclear. The statement continues with the following "financial despotism which enslaves you both" he is discussing the cycle farmers were experiencing during this…
Jim Valvano is a legend. On March 3, 1993 at the ESPYs, Valvano was awarded the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. In making his acknowledgment discourse, a growth stricken Valvano moves his audience at Madison Square Garden and everybody viewing the nation over to tears, to laughs, and even to a reality check with an end goal to bring issues to light and subsidizing for disease research. In his dialog, he notes to always remember about "where you started." Therefore, it would be appropriate to begin toward the start of Valvano's life and profession to see what shaped this man to convey such a discourse.…
The Walton Arts and Ideas Series did not look as something that would interest me, but Rick Bragg definitely proved me wrong. Listening to Rick Bragg talking about Southern identity and self-image was a pleasant experience. Besides, his delivering skills were very good and able to catch the audience attention. Indeed, it is not just the funny experiences he told that day, but also how he told them which made the whole speech a worthwhile one. Therefore, it is pertinent to analyze the strengths and the weaknesses of Bragg’s speech to learn from the good techniques he applied and to understand the weaknesses.…
Reparations for Slavery The video called “The Trillion Dollar Question’’ talked about African American activists who believe the government should pay reparations for slavery. They want the government to pay the African Americans monetary compensation for the many years of slavery of their ancestors. In the video these activists were being interviewed and they declared African Americans are still being discriminated against.…
In the modern world this is taught to many. In order to be superior, you do not speak the truth, you convey words in a manner the way people want to hear them. I believe this is what is wrong in today’s society. In the reading the advice says to not talk too freely and to watch what you say.…
Chapter four says that everything that exists, is because God created it. Everything that is made then, owes its life to God. From this revelation, Julian, a medieval Christian, draws three truths: God made the world, God loves the world, and He sustains the world. When talking about the creation, do not start at the beginning of the earth. God created something out of nothing, so God did not create anything out of himself, meaning nothing inside the world is as high as He is.…
One of the most important parts of the civil rights movement was to be able to give a compelling speech that encourages the people to act and fight for what is right. One of the key speeches of the civil rights movement was John Lewis’s speech during the march in Washington on August 28th 1968 because of his way of persuading the audience. Although he was asked to make adjustments to his already powerful speech at the March on Washington, John Lewis uses rhetorical appeals to make his argument strong and persuasive. He uses emotion to show the horrors of what is occurring, logic to convey the reasons why there needs to be a change, and his credibility to show his involvement in the civil rights movement. First of all, Lewis was able to make his argument compelling by his use of emotion, or pathos.…
Randy Pausch, a professor of computer science and Virtual Reality creation at CMU, creatively delivers his speech titled, “The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” He speaks to the audience in a very informal manner, making himself more approachable and easy to listen to. He introduces his three main speech topics in the beginning, His Childhood Dreams, Enabling the Dreams of Others, and Lessons Learned. His first main point, His Childhood Dreams, is one where he looks back at the things he wished to do as a child and how worked to meet those dreams, or to walk away having learned something from failing. Paush touches on his dream to be in zero gravity and how by creatively overcoming barriers and persevering, he was…
In Kandice Sumner’s Ted Talk, she suggests that we should give equal education to communities regardless of their wealth. Kandice is a teacher and passionately explains to us why American Education is not helping people in poor communities. She tells us a story about her childhood. Since both her parents were educated and placed a lot of value in education and Kandice was lucky enough to be in a desegregation program where she was driven on an hour long bus ride to a school in the wealthier neighborhood. During her school years, she noticed several things concerning her schooling and the schooling of her peers.…

Michael Specter’s TED Talk “The Danger of Science Denial,” is an argument on why the scientific method is great and why it is an important part of the society. According to Specter, science has been the transformative force, which has remarkably improved the society in the last thousands of years. He argues that this happens to be the best time in society, in terms of mobility, wealth, health, and opportunities. However, science has been at the center of increased suffering for billions of societies across the world, with the rise of hunger. He argues that science has led to the degradation of land, which has then led to suffering for some parts of the society.…
Are the original Seven Deadly Sins fitting for the 21st Century? Time has shown that they are outdated. The Seven Deadly Sins define that one should be selfless, content, humble, and loyal. These vague definitions are inadequate when viewed through modern mentalities. Dating sites like Tinder allow us to meet strangers and have one-night stands, no big deal.…
Ted Talk Paper The two Ted Talks I chose ended up being very intriguing due to the fact that one of them was given by a scientist and the other by an artist. The first Ted Talk I watched was called “How to Grow Fresh Air” by Kamal Meattle. Meattle explained the importance of fresh air in Delhi, a city plaqued by poor air quality, and provided a solution utilizing three types of green plants. The second Ted Talk I watched was called “Street art with a message of hope and peace” by eL Seed.…
What makes a good introduction? If that introduction was effective how do you keep the interests of the audience? These are both questions that every public speaker needs to consider before they give a speech. Not only do you have worry about these things as an audience member you are judging how effective they are the moment the speaker begins. It is that judgement that I carried with me when I watched Regina Hartley’s TED@UPS talk.…
Chris Abani discusses the idea of "ubuntu" in his Ted talk. He argues about the right to stand up against soldiers, being more compassionate and being human by reclaiming their humanity. He started by talking about the philosophical concept of Ubuntu this posits the notion that “the only way for me to be human is for you to reflect my humanity back at me” In Abani's eyes this meant that “there’s no way for us to be human without other people”. When you listen to Chris Abani you see exactly how the truth can hurt. Abani's stories describes to us a better life despite of all the bad things.…
