Critics believe the issues and dramas Julia Jarmond experiences in this novel are pale in comparison to the hatred, dicrimination and inhumane treatment the Jewish people suffered at the hands of the french in July of 1942. The critics for Sarah’s Key have mixed emotions about the story especially some of the characters. According to Good Read.com, (2009) “A little less than 100 readers posted their reviews on Sarah’s Keys and the book received a whooping 4/5 stars.” However some critics express outrage that Mrs. De Rosnay would flip from one era in time to a more modern day era and associate a 10 year old girl horrendous plight to a grown woman whose dramas in life is due to her emotional and selfish need to hold on to a man who obviously does not value her as a woman and/or wife.

According to Judt, anti-Semitism was fashionable in the 1930s and French leaders carried this attitude into the German occupation. The Jews placed their trust in individuals such as Danecker, Darlan, Vallet, Laval, and Petan yet all these men exhibited anti-Semitic views and used them as a moral justification to implement legislation against the Jews. Helene Berr writes about this betrayal when she denounces the actions of Darnard, the new Commissioner for the Maintenance of Order. She incorporated the issue of women’s rights throughout her stories by representing women in a less than conventional manner, with individual wants and needs. Late Renaissance love poetry, written in a period of increasing secularisation of it subject matter, often contains sexist depictions of women: Robert Herrick is no exception. In his poetry females are often reduced to their physical attributes, or even, in poems like Upon Julia's Clothes, their attire. As a Cavalier poet, Herrick concentrated on the pleasures of the moment and believed that enjoying life was significantly more important than following strict moral codes. This can be seen throughout his poetry, whether his persona is convincing a woman to sleep with him or merely complimenting her appearance. Herrick's poetry tends to objectify women, suggesting that their beauty is purely physical.…
