Julia Robinson Math Festival Essay

The mission of Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival activities is to pique students' interest in mathematics and problem solving. We also strive to open the minds of students who find math hard, tedious, and not useful. The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival was founded in 2007 by Nancy Blachman to provide intellectual stimulation and to enable students to have fun exploring and making mathematical discoveries.

What Happens at at Festival

The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival is a hands-on celebration usually several hours in length with activities, problems, puzzles and games designed to engage and inspire elementary, middle, and/or high school students to explore what they find of interest. How Festivals Differ from Math Classes

The Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival provides an environment different from many mathematics classrooms:
JRMF encourages students to work cooperatively and without time constraints. Participants freely share their love of math. Friendships develop that support participants’ future mathematical exploration;
JRMF problem sets are crafted to be both easily accessible to the wary or fearful student, and provide guidance and challenges for students who find math easy;
JRMF facilitates connection with math enthusiasts. The table leaders are passionate about the study and exploration of math, and can refer participants to math resources that can further their experience. They encourage and guide a student’s self-discovery, and celebrate their accomplishments;
JRMF provides at least several different problem sets so students can select something of interest.

Participants have fun exploring,making discoveries, and learning mathematics. The enthusiasm is palpable. Comparison with Other Extra-Curricular Mathematical
