“Working with both my parents and my church group in low income areas, I always thought it was so neat that the boys and girls I was getting the opportunity to meet were just like me,” Quan said.
Julia Quan grew up in a family that always challenged her to find new ways to help those around her. Those experiences led her to find her passion and future goals being able to advocate for individuals who need someone to fight for them.

While at the University she met staff members that told her about the New College and Blount Undergraduate initiative.
“Both programs were very big factors, academic wise, in convincing me that I needed to look seriously at UA,” Quan said.
During her official UA tour she met with Marysia Galbraith, a New College advisor, and Natalie Adams, the director of New College, who both showed her that her place was at Alabama.
“Both of them were huge in showing me that there is a possibility for anything that you want, we are all individuals and sometimes it’s hard to fit yourself into the box of one major,” Quan said. “They really made my dream seem real.”
Quan’s experience in New College has prepared her for her next step.
“My major in social advocacy fits perfectly into what I want to pursue in law school, which is advocating for those who do not have a voice for themselves in the courtroom,” she said.
Before Quan heads to law school, she will spend nine months in Macedonia as a Fulbright recipient working as an English teaching assistant.
