Julia Morgan architectural firm came into existence in 1904 and fifteen years later, “William Randolph Hearst hired [her] to design a main building and guest house for his ranch in San Simeon, California” (Hearst Castle). In fact, Mr. Hearst was looking for something that would be more comfortable than his prior living conditions. In the year 1919, he inherited land after his mother died from the influenza epidemic. To be specific, he inherited approximately 250,000 acres and he had plans of, “transforming it into a retreat he called La Cuesta Encantada [meaning the enchanted hill] (Hearst Castle).
