Disgusted,confused, and uncomfortable were the emotions that the piece of work evoked for me. I felt disgusted because looking at the work for the first time I felt disapproval, and I knew that something wasn’t right. I felt confused because when I first saw some of the pieces I noticed that the work resembled a vagina, but I just wasn’t sure. I felt uncomfortable because not only did the work resemble a vagina, but it looked as if it was a vagina with a disease.

In this piece of of work Chris Ofili really challenges the traditional view of the virgin Mary. The traditional virgin Mary is always portrayed as a white woman.In the piece of work Mary is portrayed as being African American. Not only does Ofili portray Mary as African American, but he also has one of Mary’s breast out and she is surrounded by ponographic photos.
The hidden message that Chris Ofili trying to convey within the context of his work is his African heritage. The breast (breast milk) symbolizes the soil from his homeland. Chris Ofili's use of elephant dung, that he got from the London Zoo ”is in many ways a reaction to what he saw and felt in Africa.” (Newyorktimes).Ofili stated that "There's something incredibly simple but incredibly basic about it. It attracts a multiple of meanings and interpretations.”
I believe that everyone has their own point of views for things. So, when Chris ofili created this piece of art it was his point of view on how he felt Mary should look. Many people want Chris to explain why he made Mary this way but at the end of the day, it's all about what and how the artist feels."I don't feel as though I have to defend it. The people who are attacking this painting are attacking their own interpretation, not mine. You never know what's going to offend people, and I don't feel it's my place to say any
