One disadvantage is not getting a job because of culture clash. What might seem appropriate to one may be inappropriate to others. Reflecting back to the comment made about hispanic women being referred to as the “Hot Tamale” in Judith Cofer’s essay, it seems as if many people thought of hispanic women in this form, then it would be hard to hire a “Hot Tamale” for a position in a school, business, or even as influential leader in the community. Stereotypes can help people if a person is in an environment where they knows that they will be or are stereotyped. They can prove others that they are beyond the judgements and greater than what is appeared, thus gaining their confidence, community advocates, and self determination.
