2 Dimensional Art The two dimensional art that I observed is called Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes, created between 1623-25. The artist of this painting is Artemisia Gentileschi. This was a large painting that covered over half of the wall. This painting was created by using oil paint. Artists used oil paintings because it dries slowly, the colors are able to blend together, and lastly oil paintings allows the painting to be larger then what it normally would be. The process of making oil painting is the mixing of ground pigments, linseed oil, and a thinner. After the use of oil painting the final step is to apply a Glaze.

Marble was used to make this sculpture. This sculpture is a young boy who seemed to have killed two geese. In relation to size, the young boy is not the size of what a boy his age would actually be. The artist of this sculpture is Italian so I believe the setting of this sculpture maybe in Italy due to style of this sculpture. The figurine consist of geometric shapes. The texture that is used is visual texture. At a glance it appears that this sculpture is rough because granules are visually present however when touched, it is very smooth due to the glaze. The glaze makes the sculpture highly finished. Shadow is definitely used in certain areas of the sculpture the boy’s faces gives its own shadow onto his chest. Also, shadow is given off from the wings of the geese unto the back of the boy’s body. The artist wanted the artwork to be viewed at different angles. That idea is given due to the fact at first glance from the front you are not be able to see exactly what it is the boy is carrying because you can only see the geese’s head. However, once you look at the back of the sculpture you can see detail of the geese’s wings and feet. The artwork used space however it does not appear to be in

It is made from wood fibers and glue (resin) that is molded into flat boards. Judith’s painting style is Oil on canvas, this is the traditional surface for oil paintings. Although oil paint can be used on most non-porous surfaces the texture and flexibility of a stretched canvas is best. The composition in Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait portrays definite emphasis and focal area, her body shows an emphasis compared to the small little monkey on her shoulder. Unfortunately, the focal point for me must be the dark feature of the picture which consist of the money, her hair as well as the unibrow which is clearly prominent on her face.…

The sculpture Triad of King Mycerinus and Two Goddesses, which resides at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was excavated from The Temple of Mycerinus in Giza and was created between 2548 - 2530 BCE, during the reign of Mycerinus. Made from greywacke, an incredibly coarse, dark sandstone, this sculpture uses variation in texture, incorrect scale, and line to draw attention to King Mycerinus in relation to the two divinities, and thus is an example of royalty as divinity. Overall, this sculpture depicts the goddess of the Hare Nome, the goddess Hathor, and the King Mycerinus (in that order from left to right), all carved from a single block of greywacke. Additionally, this is an example of a high relief sculpture, meaning that the sculpture is…

Auguste Rodin is perhaps best known for his iconic bronze sculpture The Thinker. Amongst his other works is another bronze piece titled The Vulcan’s Forge, cast in 1905. The rectangular relief sculpture features a group of five ancient Roman men smithing at a forge. The group is transfixed on their tiring task to the point that they have no connection to the world around them, nor do they have notable purpose; they are slaves to their work. Additionally, the juxtaposition of archaic subject matter in a modern piece leads me to believe Rodin is opposed to classical hypermasculinity and the traditional idea that hard work is done by men.…

Carved in the Hellenistic period, Draped Relief of Youth is a relief by an unknown artist from Europe. Today this sculpture is on display in the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. Through the use of symmetric geometry, vertical directionality, and interplay between light and shadow, the artist of Draped Relief of Youth captures the essence of youth, namely ephemerality and unblemished form. A detailed description of the essence of youth, and physical characteristics of this image create a framework that can be used to understand how this artist creates a powerful effect.…

Hung Liu decided to paint this using oil on a canvas. By her using this media it made it appear as if it was photograph. This allowed the viewer to get a flash of the past since it made it look antique and the dripping effect by the oil further contributed to that very thing. Hung Liu style is quite impressive as well. Throughout most of her paintings she uses oil canvas and frequently has a great deal of contrast of colors within them.…

The sculpture in Unknown #4 depicts the upper body of a middle-aged man. That the figure shows the imperfections which come with age suggests that the sculpture is of Roman origin rather than Greek. Carved from marble, the sculpture extends to the lower chest of the man, just above the solar plexus. The chest and shoulders are soft and lightly defined: the pectoral muscles are visible only as gentle contours, and the shoulders slope downwards in fleshy smoothness. The head of the figure is carved with intricate detail, especially in the hair, beard, eyes, nose, and facial wrinkles.…

In contrasting pieces of art, it is important to first identify the time period that each work is from. In this essay the pieces of art that are being compared and contrasted are, “Kritios Boy,” from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and “Dying Gaul,” from Capitolini in Rome, Italy. Kritios Boy was created during the Early Classical style period (480- 323 BCE). The Early Classical style is often referred to as Severe or Transitional, as it was known to bridge the gap between the Archaic and Classical. There is controversy as to weather the Kritios Boy belongs to the late Archaic period or to the Early Classical period, however the Kritios Boy displays many Early Classical attributes that seem to confirm it as Early Classical.…

Drawing focuses on a 2-dimensional surface. The sculptors drew 2-dimensional versions of their sculptures as a plan to create the work, as clarification of their work. They have drawn to the three aspects to “Seeing”: visual perception - the ability of the brain to accurately judge the shapes, relationships and proportions evident in the data that our eyes take in, visualising - our ability to recognise and organise the ‘drawing potential” of a subject, visual literacy -the ability to read and interpret the marks of the drawing itself. Giacometti’s perceptual drawing is almost an exact depiction of his sculpture, utilising line to create tone, thus transforming the image from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional. Giacometti’s and Goldsworthy’s sculptures are very distinctive, but their drawings are very similar.…

This piece is called Warrior with Shield by Henry Moore, from the mid-twentieth century (1953-1954). Looking at this sculpture we see a powerful image of a man who looks like a solider, defending himself. The body is manipulated by the artist in such a way that both fear and strength are portrayed in the sculpture. The man is sitting, holding a circular shield in his right hand towards his chest. His left arm and leg are severed, which could be the reasoning for him not standing while protecting himself.…
