Judging People Research Paper

Looking different can range from birth defects and scars to tattoos and piercings. Yet, all these things can be discriminated against. Judging people by their looks is an insanely superficial thing to do, and though we don't like to admit it, we all do it. Even first impressions that someone gets from a person is judging someone solely based on appearance. First impressions are important, but it seems that people that look different are less likely to be accepted.
A perfect example of this tattoos. According to a video posted by ATTN, 27% of hiring managers are less likely to promote someone with visible tattoos. People with body modifications like piercings, tattoos, and even abnormally colored hair, seem to be misjudged. Every summer, I go to a mission camp in Petersburg where campers help a variety of different people in the surrounding area. A couple of

Joseph Merrick, or Elephant Man as he's more commonly known as, didn't get this luxury. With bony and fleshy tumors covering his body, he always got stares wherever he went. A more recent example of this is Rose Siggins. Rose was born with legs that didn't work, so her parents had them amputated. Rose had a documentary made about her life that was featured in a documentary series by the British Broadcasting Corporation. In the documentary, Rose talks about how she got stares practically everywhere she went. She really had no way to work at a normal job, like Gregor Samsa in the story, The Metamorphosis. In the story, Samsa is unable to work because of a new physical appearance brought upon him. Even though it's not as extreme as having tumors covering your body, or having no legs, people with scars can be misjudged too. When I was in fourth grade, I slipped and fell on a sharp pile of rocks in my driveway. I had to get thirteen stitches, and after the scar had healed, I had people that were scared to come near me because of my "scary

Looks aren’t everything People judge others by the way they look rather than their type of personality. A person may completely look normal but might have some flaws that make them different. You wouldn’t know that just by looking at them, you would have to get to know the person to figure out what they are like. Even if we see someone sketchy walking in an ally in the middle of the night, we assume that they are a bad person, because they’re in an alley in the middle of the night doing who knows what, but in reality it’s just a person trying to get home. Looks shouldn’t define who a person is; their personality should define who they are.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

Do you think that people in your community judge others based on look, and do you think you are being defined by others? Status is based on how we dress, look, and where we come from and is supposed to be interpreted in a positive way. This is because our differences are what make us unique and special in our own ways. Unfortunately, people in the world are using our differences to separate us into multiple categories.…

Tattoos and Piercings Bias Tattoos and piercings have become more and more popular fashion statements as artists continue to create new ideas, as well as the acceptance of the ink and jewelry. Although it may seem that there is an approval towards this style, many are put into stereotypical categories based on their appearance. Regardless of who the person truly is, the bias associated with tattoos and piercings often leads him/her to be percieved as less intelligent, fraudulent, and less spiritual.…

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences” - Audre Lorde. As the years pass, the need to accept others as they are is still an issue. Despite the attempt to make this issue disappear, people are still being judged by their race, beliefs, physical appearance and much more. This type of judgement happens all over the world and can affect people and a community both physically and emotionally.…

In The New Jim Crow, Alexander questions the hypocritical viewpoint of our nation by stating, "In a country that preaches the virtues of democracy, one could reasonably assume that being stripped of basic political rights would be treated by judges and court personnel as a serious matter indeed" (102). Even though Alexander had referred to the rights of the black community after slavery, her statement still holds strong today. America is supposed to live as a free country and fight for its citizens, what good is a democracy if it only fights for certain lives when it pertains to a person 's rights? Even though Buck did commit a serious crime that would rightfully strip him of certain rights as a citizen, he should never be stripped away the…

Have you ever just been able to walk around without being judged? Simply walking down the street can get you judged, looked at funny and even assumptions. Racism still exists in this world today and it’s sad to say that “everyone is equal” when that is not true at all. People get treated differently every day where ever you live. Just by the way you look should not determine the way you are going to get treated especially for the way you dress, act, gender, and race.…

Argumentative Essay When it comes to tattoos and piercings in the workplace today, there is still a stigma about the discrimination of them. Tattoos have been around roughly 5,200 years (Lineberry). They were originally used by the Ancient Greeks, Romans, and the Egyptians to mark the people who were criminals, slaves and just for identification; sailors also used them for identification. Later on, convicts and gangs used them; however, in today’s culture people are using them for self-expression and body art (Prewett).…

Tattoo’s, in the recent years, have been becoming more and more socially acceptable, but people still face problems with their careers and daily lives due to certain tattoo’s that they may have. Tattoo’s that are extremely noticeable in places such as a person’s face, neck, hands, or arms often causes conflict to that person’s chance of pursuing their desired profession. Many professions are accepting of people’s ink. However, professions such as law enforcement and education are not as accepting as other career choices. They often don't allow people with obvious or inappropriate tattoo’s to continue further in that certain profession.…
