These stories are filled with violence and immorality. They are gruesome reminders that without God and righteousness, mankind falls horribly short of any kind of goodness. In the end of Judges, the entire theme of the book is summed up in one single verse: “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever he wanted.” (Judges 21:25, HCSB). Judges is a book of destruction and violence and points out Israel’s and the worlds need for God. Within this book, one can understand the true and depraved nature of mankind. David illustrates this idea perfectly, and also further goes on to show the divine forgetfulness of God. Yes, God hates sin and has to be angry at it. However, God will not be angry for eternity. With repentance and continued faith — both of which David showed greatly — God will forgive and continue to bless those who love Him. This story of the life of David just goes to show that God specializes in taking the weakest and most broken of anyone and mending, making them whole and blessing them immensely.
