Juan Ruis Rivera was born on August 26, 1848 in Mayaguez Puerto Rico. He participated in the Grito of Lares, which was a revolt that was held against Spain in Puerto Rico. He also went to New York and went to a Cuban Revolutionary “junta” and he offered to help them out. He then went to Cuba with la junta and fought in the Ten Year’s war against Spain. After the war ended with the treaty of Zanjon, Ruis wasn’t really happy with that treaty so he moved to Hondras and got married to Aurora Estrada Palma. When the Spaniards did not keep their part in the treaty, Ruis joined the Cuban Liberation Army as one its generals.
