Juan Observation

Juan is a very good reader from my few interactions that I have had with him and based on his scores when given the different assessments. He is able to pronounce the words and read without much struggle and according to his grade level. There are those words, which he sometimes stumbles upon, just like a lot of us do so as well today, but they are words that may be too advanced for him or not in his day-to-day vocabulary. But, just like any other student his age, there are a few things in which he can improve on that would help him become a better reader. This being said, main area that Juan struggles in is comprehension. Although he is able to read with much ease, once I ask him to refer to what he is saying, he usually finds it hard or tends …show more content…
One of my hypotheses as to why he has the comprehension issue is because he is way too focused on being able to pronounce the word correct that he does not pay too much attention to what he is reading. Another area that he seems to need help in is when he gets frustrated when he is not able to read a word correctly or does not know what the word means. He tends to become upset and want to stop reading all together. This is a big problem because I seem to be spending more time trying to engage him in being able to read again than actually reading itself. Other than these two main areas, Juan seems to be doing very well in his reading based on his age and the grade in which he is on.

For the comprehension problem, there are a few things that I had tried and new things that I will try in order to better this aspect of reading for the first 30 minutes that w are in session. One technique that I have tried is making him go back and read the passage aging but in a much slower pace. This allows him to focus on each word for a longer period of time hopefully making him understand it much better. Another things that I

My case study student is a second grader who loves mystery books, video games and playing with friends. My first day in the classroom before being assigned my case study student, I almost immediately bonded with my case study student over the stories of Goosebumps, after that he constantly asked me to sit with him during lunch and asked me for help. I would consider him to have a limited internal dialogue because he often says whatever is on his mind, but it frequently turns out hilarious and gives his audience of peers a good chuckle. The literacy portion each day is centered around the daily five and in one station they walk to reading. The students work on a new high frequency word where they have to an antonym, synonym, a rhyme and write…

Christopher’s independent level for oral reading was at grade 2 which is 3 levels below his current grade placement. His instructional level was estimated at grade 5 and frustration reading level was at grade 6 on the Oral Reading Passages. Compared with his performance of grade 5 for independent reading on the GWL, Christopher’s independent level for the oral reading passages of the Ekwall/Shanker was inconsistent at grade 2. In addition, instructional level of Christopher at grade 5 was a level higher than his instructional level of grade 4 on the San Diego GWL, suggesting that Christopher finds the task of reading words in context easier than when required to read words in isolation. Upon further testing, frustration level for Christopher’s…

It is easy for a student to get off track when they are rushing through. If the student can focus on keeping their finger directly under the word being read, it will help them keep their place and set a pace. In the future, to help her slow down her reading, I would give her a minimum goal time. For example, I would practice beforehand to estimate an appropriate time for the passage. I would tell her she has to make the passage last for at least a specific number of minutes, otherwise she will know she is reading too fast.…
