Effective communication and critical thinking are the other skills I sharped in the ALC. Also, this class improved my briefing skills and ability to stand in front of a group of people and talk to them about different subjects. The NCO week expanded my knowledge about leadership and key role we play as Non-Commissioned Offers in the Army. The briefing, we received from Training and Doctrine Command Sergeant Major Davenport certainly opened my vision on how to approach soldiers and resolve their problems as he stated “I am talking to you all not at you…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

As sergeant major, I will work with subordinates and staffs and there will be situations that I will have to remember the principles of mission command, summarized in the memorable quotation from the Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 6-0 (2012). Through leadership, commanders build teams. They develop and maintain mutual trust and a shared understanding throughout the force and with unified action partners. Commanders understand that subordinates and staffs require resources and a clear intent to guide their actions. They allow them the freedom of action to exercise disciplined initiative to adapt to changing situations.…
