Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

Leadership is imperative to supporting the foundation of succession in our society. It is important that we exercise our God given right to utilize our sphere of influence to the best of our abilities. Although leadership may gain you more recognition throughout society it is not about the affluence one can acquire; leading is solely about guiding others down a path of success so that future generations can more easily learn from our mistakes to pass down to the next generation. That is why I believe mentoring and any position of leadership should be central to young adults to set the example for the impactful youth. I found my sphere of influence to be within the academic driven chapter of the National Honor Society which in my senior year I was elected president.…

As a student of Beacon high school, I have made many efforts to model my daily actions around exemplifying the student of honor. While at JBU I hope that I can be an encouragement to others to dig deeper into God's word. Throughout high school I have noticed a large amount of people who may attend church on sunday but I can not tell during the school week that they are in fact christians. This is a reminder to me that I am always representing God and Christianity whenever and wherever I am. Because of this I have been involved in starting a few prayer groups over the years to help encourage and bring my brothers and sisters in Christ together as a way to encourage one another. One thing I find encouraging about JBU is the student led worship service I attended while on my visit.…

My sign’s purpose was to make advocate or spread awareness about domestic violence. I know many people including my friends and family who are victims or abusers of domestic violence, but I always took it lightly and didn’t speak up about what was happening. But ever since I started this project about domestic violence and became more educated on domestic violence, it really transformed my opinion on domestic violence. Before researching and finding more information about domestic violence, I didn’t really care to speak up about domestic violence; but after reading victims’ stories on domestic violence and really diving deep into how dangerous and heartbreaking domestic violence is, I started to believe that domestic violence is never right…

This past June, I ran the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. I must have motivated my mother from my previous marathon, as she decided to sign up as a charity walker for the Multiple Sclerosis Society in the half distance. My goal of my first marathon had not only been to run for myself, but to inspire my mother to not give up on the passion she once had. Healthy lifestyles are lifetime endeavors not only because they require continuous work, but become inspiring when true results are made. Minor successes are more likely to motivate students to start working out on their own, or even taking a group fitness class at their local gym.…
