The book I read for my Precis was The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. The book was published on March 28, 1990. This book is a collection of short stories following an American platoon during the Vietnam War that lasted from 1955 to 1975. The text was written after the war and is O’Brian telling about his platoon and his experience. The text is broken into many different short stories, beginning with the things his platoon physically carried along with the emotional baggage they had with them . In the story “On a Rainy River” O’Brien tells of how he coped with learning that he had to serve in vietnam. The other stories tell of the ways his colleagues died in the war, he reflects on these characters, things that went on in their lives, and their history. William Timothy O'Brien was born in 1946 in the town of Worthington Minnesota. His father was an insurance salesman while his mom worked in an elementary school as a teacher. As O'Brien grew up he never took interest in war, he was raised as a liberal. During college he studied political science and would often attend peace rallies that protested the Vietnam War. This was the first war that the United States fought where guerilla tactics were used against us. Normally in battle it was the U.S. that would use Guerilla tactics however to have the vietnamese use these tactics it was morally destructive to the troops seeing their friends being killed by booby traps and things of that nature. Vietnam was also a war that tore America. Soldiers didn’t get much respect during and after the war, this lead them to socialize among other viets because they were the only one who they could relate to and felt the same way about the war. Tactics on the field were based more on politics than actual field conditions, this was one of the major wars where this was a huge issue getting many Americans
