According to Joyce Giger and Ruth Davidhizar health is affected by culturally specific behaviors in illness and wellness. They state that a persons’ culture, values, and beliefs all contribute to their health (Giger & Davidhizar, 2002). It appears health, the working of the body, is inextricably linked to culture. To heal someone, a reasonably prudent nurse must consider a patients’ cultural needs. Every nurse should be knowledgeable about what culture is and how it can affect their patients’ health and well-being. Culture is values, norms, and practices that are shared by people within the same group. Culture can help to guide us in everything that we do and who we are. It can help to shape a persons’ thinking, decision-making and self-worth.

It is imperative that nurses gain cultural competency so that they can interact with any patient of any culture in a proactive manner. They must gain knowledge of cultural beliefs, behaviors and heritages so that they can deliver meaningful care.
