Bowdoin College has a history that goes all the way back to the year 1794. Distinguished alumni include the author Nathaniel Hawthorne, former President Franklin Pierce and the notable psychologist researcher Alfred Kinsey. Bowdoin College was one of the first schools to make the SAT and ACT scores optional on their application in the early 1970’s. Although there are only under 2,000 undergraduate students enrolled every year, Bowdoin College is continually ranked as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick, Maine on a suburban campus of 200 acres.
The college’s athletic teams compete in over 30 varsity sports in the NCAA Division III New England Small College Athletic Conference. Bowdoin College offers almost 100 student organizations. The Outing Club is one of the biggest and most active groups because they over 100 interesting excursions each year. Over half of Bowdoin College’s undergraduate students study abroad for at least a semester through the 100 plus overseas affiliated academic programs. The most famous club is the Peucinian Society, which was founded in 1805, because it is one of the oldest intellectual societies in the country. One of the greatest American poets of all time, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a notable alumnus.
