As women they must cook, clean, and all types of housework or chores only women are obliged to do. Quoted on page 56, “Teach her how to wash rice properly so that the water runs clear. Her husband cannot eat muddy rice.” Lindo has to learn how wash rice. This quote shows another example how women are expected to cook and displays that cooking is a women’s job. The mothers teach their daughters to be disciplined so they could be suitable women and fit their ‘role’.

In Half and Half, Rose is very uncertain about what she wants when Ted stops making decisions. Later on in the book in Without Wood, Rose and her husband undergo a divorce. She explains a different version of how she feels to her friends like how frustrated she is, the good she sees coming out of the divorce, and revenge.
