In Matt de la Peña’s Mexican Whiteboy, the actions of his Danny’s father strongly influences him, which starts to ruin his relationship with his mother. “Ever since his dad took off, Danny’s drifted apart from his mom. He hardly even acknowledges her presence these days” (de la Peña, ch. 5). This situation shows how Danny’s actions and interactions with his mother, are directly influenced by the actions of his dad. Another situation in which a parent influences their child through their own actions, is in The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver. Throughout the book, Taylor explains how her mother influences her. In one situation, Taylor explains that the way her mother raises her influences her actions. “If Mama hadn’t brought me up to do better, I think I would have told that old snake to put down her fork and get her backside out the door” (Kingsolver, ch. 7).
