Among all these things, I have also come to understand that in life, there is always something else to learn. There is always a new experience to be had, or a story to be told, that has the capacity to open someone’s eyes to a tremendous land of liberties, or teach them what it is like to come from a place where all have been stripped from you. In writing this essay, we were asked to look into our family’s history and try and unearth an heirloom that somehow wove together our story of strife and our journey to freedom. My grandfather was a bank administrator in Cuba, and came to the United States to work two jobs, as a dishwasher and as an aluminum factory worker, walking 7 miles to and from work everyday. No job was beneath him. To my grandfather, every job was honorable if it meant he could support his family. My grandmother managed to, without the presence of her parents, finish high school, begin her career, graduate from the University of Miami with a bachelor 's degree (with a 3 year old daughter, my mother) and eventually, even walk across the stage to receive her law degree (my mother was 7 at the time). These are only two of the many examples my family has to offer regarding the importance of hard work and how with fierce dedication and the will to succeed, anything is within your grasp. Hard work has been instilled in me by my parents and grandparents. I am here because I stand on the shoulders of my family and that is something I will never forget. I hope to honor them by working hard as well and facing my challenges as they have faced

School used to be a joke to me and I didn’t really know the concept of what the word work meant. A horrible event in my life has changed my perspective on things; it has set me on a course of positive actions that lead me to start accomplishing career goals. It was a blustery fall day, jack-o-lanterns and festive decorations where up for Halloween. I was driving home from a long night of partying and had a few to many beers to be driving.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…
