Discovery can be a sudden or unexpected experience, that is faced with a positive or negative attitude and often involves an outcome that is either physical, emotional or both. Individuals can deliberately transform themselves as they may have been exposed to an impactful discovery. The poetry studied, written by Australian poet, Robert Gray, explores a concept of discovery through the character’s individual selves among the worlds in which they are surrounded by. The anthology of the poems, Journey the North Coast, The Meatworks and North Coast Town all provoke an idea of discovery through a form of transformation of a persona. Journey the North Coast illustrates the journey of a man who sets on-board a train along NSW’s North Coast to relive

An individual may be faced with a challenge, which can affect their actions either positively or negatively. Journey the North Coast reflects this change when the persona illustrates a positive attitude towards his situation, as he demonstrates an immediate action of the journey beginning, “Next thing, I wake up in a swaying bunk as if on board a clipper clambering at sea”. Gray’s alliteration and simile determines the setting of where the man is situated, which the reader can conclude that the persona is adapting to a new environment, as he has been living on a train and is developing a new form of himself. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland highlights a discovery that takes place, which results in Alice to be shocked, as it was unexpected. The narrator publishes “…when suddenly, thump! thump! Down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over”. The effect of onomatopoeia and tactile imagery creates engagement to the reader and gives them a setting of where Alice is situated. Through this, her reaction is shared to communicate her change of self, to adapt to the changes and challenges she is faced with once she is at the bottom of the new world. A discovery can be experienced in unusual ways, either positively or negatively, and can help us explore new perceptions of ourselves. The persona from The Meatworks is forced to work in a horrific environment, due to being the only employee. The contrast stated, "the beach, and those startling, storm cloud mountains, high beyond the furthest fibro houses, I’d come to be with (The only work was at this Works.) – My wife…”, compares the difference between his job and his wife, the different emotions and attitudes within the two. Both worlds are completely different, with his job being hardworking in a low paid business, which generate his emotions to be disheartened and confined in the workplace. However, when he is with his wife he feels connected, happy and fulfilled with her presence. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland highlights “the rabbit hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way…dipped suddenly down…before she found herself falling down what seemed to be a very steep well”. Carroll’s simile and tactile imagery compares the rabbit hole to a tunnel like structure, as both of them have a difference of depth. The imagery is used to create a visual representation for the reader, which illustrates Alice is fearful about her actions, and she is concerned for new experiences. Consequently, both composers display the idea of an eventful discovery
