It was my uncle’s weeding and all of my family members including the relatives were together. My mother was talking to one of her friends when she called me to ask the date of my visa interview. “How could he live without the family! He doesn’t even know how to cook.” I felt embarrassed. Adding fuel to fire, my younger sister bragged about her cooking ability. I knew she was trying to poke me but I felt much humiliated and inferior. That day, I slept with the dreams of me cooking. Next morning, I woke up early and made a cup of tea for myself. It was annoying when I took a sip of it. I wondered how my mum could make such soft and sweet cup of tea. I threw away the tea and washed the dishes quietly to pretend that I was up to nothing. From that day, I began to inspect closely on my mother and sister’s cooking techniques without letting them know about it. My mother often got frustrated of me messing around but I knew she had no idea of the thing that was going on my mind. What happened after is the one of the best moment in my life that I can never forget. I just went to my mum and said, “I want to learn cooking.” Her loud laughter filled the room while I was red with shame and shyness. I still feel joyous when remembering that moment; her laugh in particular. She told me to look at the way she cooks.
