Journal Reflection 4 Challenging Assumptions Chapter 8, Question 1 I believe that it can be assumed that the assertive response is usually the best. Assertiveness is a skill that I wish I knew how to utilize more effectively. However, many people confuse being honest and straightforward, assertiveness, with being rude. I think that the aspects that encompass an assertive response can be useful in most everyday communication situations. An assertive response “demonstrates that you have listened to and considered the other person’s viewpoint, have the satisfaction of knowing that you expressed yourself clearly and honestly, and allows the other person to maintain his or her self-respect” (Brownell 266). The textbook also states that assertiveness is “best understood in contrast to aggressive and …show more content…
Some assertive skills stated in the textbook are “Saying no when you want to, receiving criticism, giving criticism, expressing feelings, terminating conversations, not allowing others to give you their problems, expressing ideas concisely, giving others compliments, standing up for unpopular opinions, stating personal needs, initiating conversations, and demonstrating appropriate nonverbal behaviors” (Brownell 268). I think that improving these skills will help me in stressful situations, as well as help other individuals who struggle with these skills. Specific skills I would like to improve upon are “saying no when you want to” and “receiving criticism”. I struggle with saying no, wanting to appease people, and accepting other people’s problems as my own. For instance, if someone asks me to do something I feel bad for saying no, even if I do not have time to do it. Consequently, I end up disappointing the person and seeming unreliable when I do this. If I was more assertive, I could avoid awkward situations like this, which is why I wish it was more socially acceptable to be

The Division cannot designate that financial aid funds be used for in-home maintenance and use Division funds for the above educational expenses. If a person in a postsecondary institution receives sufficient financial aid to cover the above listed educational expenses, the Division would not authorize training services until the client’s entire financial aid is accounted for toward payments for educationally related needs/costs.…

I will exemplify these skills by giving evidence of my conclusion from my Segment 2 paper. In the conclusion I addressed my original research question of “how do speech and language disorders affect learning and cognitive development in adolescents and adults? To answer this I said that there is no one word answer. I proceeded to address the question by saying, growing up with speech and language disorders has a lot of complex obstacles that people have to move part in order to keep on maturing in their cognitive well being. I added on that it could also lead to other issues in their social and intellectual well being, while battling the daily struggles of being demoted because of their disorder.…

According to the conflict quiz posted on Blackboard, I have an accommodating conflict resolution style. This conflict resolution style means that I prefer to sacrifice my goals and beliefs to avoid conflict with team members. The accommodating conflict resolution style allows for relationships between group members to be unstrained and preserved. I believe that this is my conflict resolution styles because every team or group I have been a part of I do not share my opinions for the sake of avoiding an argument or disagreement. When in groups I prefer for everyone to get along because it allows for meetings to run smoother.…

Upon taking the Newline Ideas Communication assessment my two highest scores were in Assertive and Aggressive categories scoring a 17 and 16 in both of those. Realizing that these scores are only one point away from one another and reading the explanation below them, I came to the conclusion that most of the time my communication style is Assertive, but there is also a good chance that my style would also fit into the aggressive category depending on the situation. Upon interviewing my friends and my current boss they agreed upon the term decisively cautious as how they would describe my communication style. In particular, my boss stated that I approach each situation differently and depending how what the goal of the communication is I act…

Self-Assessment Assignment 1.A. Personality Test: Guardians I have already done this kind of test more than twice before, and I always got the same result, which is ISTJ. This website didn’t tell which personality type I have, but they told me I am a Guardian (SJ’s), and ISTJ is one of the four types of Guardians. The part that I totally agree with is that I am following the rules and cooperating with others, not very comfortable blazing new trails, cautious about change, honor customs and traditions, and believe in law and order. Many people say that I am very tradition and somewhat conservative, but I am also kind of flexible and open-minded.…

An area of Applied Psychology 1 that has captured my interest is the field of educational psychology. This field of study is interested with children and young adults in educational and early years’ settings (British Psychology Society (BPS), 2016). This has captured my interest as children are especially vulnerable during school years, due to a variety of reasons such as low self esteem. This could be due to learning difficulties such as dyslexia and behaviourial problems. I believe that I would find it rewarding to work with children to help them develop their own skills and abilities in regards to the obstacles shown early in their life.…

Throughout this semester, the most useful lesson I learned was from doing this self-assessment, which assisted in having a clearer understanding of who I am and who I will become. More importantly, they allowed me to better understand my own strengths and weaknesses, and how to better develop them. This understanding is essential to me as a future practitioner in the events industry. In this essay, I will discuss my own leadership style as “pacesetting” based on the self-assessment result proposed by Daniel Goleman (2000). I will first discuss my leadership strengths (e.g., time management) and weaknesses (e.g., lack of negotiation skills) retrieved from the self-assessment and my daily life.…

Introduction “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” — Vince Lombardi As I reflect on my leadership journey, I become more convinced with Vince that leaders are not born leaders, but are a result of a conscious effort to be one. While serving in various institutions in leadership positions, I have seen myself emerge to those positions through my hard work and skills rather than just having been assigned to it. Various factors like experience, training, mentorship, conscious practice and even failure have contributed in developing my leadership abilities.…
