Hi, my name Odysseus. You have probably heard of the many struggles that I’ve faced these past couple of years. I have been from island to island losing men left and right, which is due to my many misfortunes. The story I’m about to tell you is a little gruesome if I do say so myself. The choices that I made in this particular place may not have been the best. For now Poseidon, the god of the sea, dislikes me. And on this note, I will start the story. One day as we were sailing at sea, we saw an island in the distance. As we came closer, we saw the wine, cheese, and sheep that were here on this island. Surprised, we soon stopped on the island and went into this gigantic cave. It was tremendously large and filled with all the cheese and wine a group of men could ever ask for. As we began to eat and drink, we heard large footsteps of something outside. My men and I all looked at each other with crooked faces wondering what could make such large sounds with its’ feet. Then we saw it, the root of all the problems we would face on this island. The cyclops, whose name is Polyphemus, was coming to rest in his cave. The cyclops put a huge boulder over the door, so that we could not get out and so that no light could come in. Polyphemus made …show more content…
Quickly I came up with plan. We would hide under the goats. As we were sneaking out, Polyphemus felt the goat's’ skin but didn’t notice my men or I under them. As soon as we had escaped and gotten back onto our boat, I taunted Polyphemus. He was angry! He picked up a boulder and threw it at our ship. Then I proclaimed,” If anyone asks who did this, tell them that it was Odysseus.” And Polyphemus began to pray that Poseidon would avenge me and my men. He said that there would be hardships at home and that all my men would die. If you know the rest of the story, I’m sure that you think that it was crazy that all these things happened to

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is a character whose traits affect the plotline rather substantially, including the clever ways he uses his hospitality, as well as the negative impacts of his arrogance. Odysseus’ sense of hospitality helped him out of a bad situation when he, extended his “friendship” to the Cyclops and offered him wine when they found themselves trapped inside Polyphemus’s cave. He uses this to manipulate Polyphemus into a false sense of security, the Cyclops going so far as to tell Odysseus that he will make him a “gift that will please (Homer 306),” implying that Polyphemus believes Odysseus is being honest and sincere. Because Odysseus planned ahead, he then tells the giant that his name is, instead, “Nohbdy,” which will later…

The household in Homer’s The Odyssey can be considered the basis of Ancient Greek society, as all societal recognition and conventions stem from this unit. Any actions committed that attempt to ruin the integrity and tradition of one’s household are therefore considered severe crimes that must be wholly resolved by equally severe vengeance. Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus recognize the deep importance of their family household, and possess the persistent need to maintain its integrity and tradition. The gods advise these mortals in their shared struggle, even consistently intervening in their conflict to ensure that the restoration of their household is achieved, suggesting that both gods and men serve a societal order that must be preserved…

A giant, one-eyed Cyclops, who bashes the brains of Odysseus’ men, dismembers them, and then consumes every piece, sounds like a frightening monster. However, Polyphemos’ barbaric actions are not much different from Odysseus’ slaughter of the suitors later in the epic poem. Both Polyphemos and Odysseus are associated to acting like a mountain lion. Polyphemos catches two of Odysseus’ men, “beats their brains out, spattering the floor,” and devours the men, “gaping and crunching like a mountain lion” (9: 303, 305). Similarly, the old Nurse finds Odysseus, “spattered and caked with blood, like a mountain lion when he has gorged upon an ox” (22: 419-420).…

The Odyssey, still today, is one of the most recognized epic poems of all times. An important theme evident throughout the epic poem is hospitality. Hospitality, the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers, is very important to the gods and goddesses. It is just as important for the guest to honor the host as it is for the host to honor the guest. A violation of the expected treatment of a guest or host during ancient Greek times would often result in violence.…
