Workshop Four - 4.1 Journal Field Log
For this journal entry I will share two different activities which include doing some assessments and making some mistakes and working with high school students that came to the nursing home to work with the residents and play games in the activity room and sing Christmas songs for the residents at the nursing home.
Description of activity (what happened). One of the activities that I got to do was some assessments, however, because the forms have different things on them it is easy to get confused about what to fill out and I made some mistakes. In addition, because the forms were not explained in detail about what needed to be filled out and because of miscommunication some information was filled out wrong and some information was missed, however, that has all been straightened out and we also discussed other things such as daily activity sheets and some new things that we will learn which is doing things with residents that are more one on one for residents that have more serious health issues and doing activities with them such as reading to them for one example.

Our care manager discussed a lot of pertinent information that can improve the quality of care that we are giving to the residents in the unit. She emphasised about the completion of short term care plans, bowel book and incident forms. She also reminded the staff regarding the incoming staff auditing, infection control policies, management of outbreak and confidentiality of the residents. In addition, she informed all the staff to keep the medicine cupboards locked at all times, avoid overfilling the white bags and be aware of the toileting needs of the residents.…

This week in labour and delivery I was able to gain many new experiences. On Tuesday, I gained a lot through the interaction and conversation between healthcare workers and students as it was a slower day on the floor allowing me to see how important teamwork and collaboration is in the health field. This week I was able to work with Lisa, a registered travel nurse who did an excellent job at making me feel part of the team. She gave me many new experiences and taught me a lot through engaging me in with the patient.…

This week in third grade was very different, it was a short week due to our professional development. Monday was a normal day starting with our spelling unit which I have already taken over. I am still helping the students work through the first day by explaining the skill. This week I asked students to work on day two independently and turn it in when they finished. I was noticing that students were not doing the work and waiting to fill it in until we went over it as a class.…

Through these semesters there was a lot of important information that we have all earned and it is important to bring it all together to be successful in clinics. We have also learned about dental hygiene process of care model and that is a significant aspect in client care clinics. As we started clinic in week 2 I found that my time management skills were not as good. I found myself wasting time and not using it efficiently but as more clinics happened, I got better and was able to do things in advanced, which really helped.…

My first semester as a Residential Assistant has been an overall interesting, challenging, and defining experience, to say the least. Traversing through the early stages of the position, such as move-in, training, and meeting my residents, couldn’t have prepared me enough for the amazing experience that I have had thus far. Although I’ve had conversations with friends currently and previously in the position, and have had my own past experiences with RAs, I genuinely did not know what to expect when it was my turn to take on the job. This unfamiliarity with the job and uncertainty of what to expect, although daunting at first, were relieved very early on by realizing the impact I was making through my position. Several of the things that draw…

I do not think that I can say that this activity was 100% completed as learning and education is a continual and constant component of the nursing profession. I do feel that I made excellent use of the clinical opportunities presented to further my nursing practice. This activity continued to facilitate my learning goal of building and developing my pre-existing clinical knowledge. By discussing my assessment findings and then interpreting there meaning with my preceptors on a daily basis I was able to build strong links between assessment and pathology by using normal/abnormal findings. This activity contributed to building my nursing competence as it provided me the ability to practice my physical assessment skills to a point where I have confidence in my own findings and have no issue’s presenting these findings to the other healthcare team members (without having to have my preceptor validate them).…

Elderly people have always held a special place in my heart, so I wanted to do my field work in a nearby nursing home that I had never visited. I set out to learn about the quality of life that elderly people had in the nursing home and what contributed to that quality, either good or bad. I called ahead to get permission to do this assignment and get access to various areas of the building. I did not give a specific time or day so that I could ensure as natural setting as possible with no special accommodations from the home. I was allowed to make my observations in various parts of the building such as the lobby, lunchroom, and activities room.…

As I looked through my entries I noticed a pattern on me thinking about school working, my friends/family and what I have planned throughout this week and next consistently. There did not seem to be a pattern as to when I thought about each thing much it seemed to be more random. I did however notice that towards the afternoon I tended to think more about my plans and school work. I believe this occurred because I normally make plans to do things later in the day and I also do better at working on school work in the early morning or in the late afternoon.…
