Journal Entry 1

Last year and the year before that I felt like an outsider. It wasn’t because no one liked me, or I ate lunch by myself. I wasn’t the “normal” situation of being that random kid in the group. It was more that I have so many parts of my personality that differ when it comes to being fully a part of a clique. For example, I love going shopping and playing sports, but I love all things nerdy. This has mostly affected me through middle school. Where you sit at lunch it a major deal, like the clip from “Mean Girls”. Since people tend to like me because of my variety of interests I’m always invited to sit at different places during lunch, even sometimes two different groups that usually dislike each other. This usually stresses

“She’s Your Basic LOL in NAD” by Perri Klass is an engaging essay about medical terminology and its functions, whether positive or negative, from the perspective of a first-year medical student who has just begun working in a hospital. The essay begins with a dialogue of an intern telling the students about a patient, Mrs.Tolstoy, who is a “basic LOL in NAD,” Klass then explains this means she is a Little Old Lady in No Apparent Distress. This is an example of the endless medical terminology that was quickly learned within 3 months of being a medical student. This “jargon” fell into place in Klass’ mind, she took it for granted at times by using it in her daily life, thinking that this was obvious knowledge to everyone. There are different…

Locked In! Elie Wiesel’s work, Night, published in 1958, demonstrates the struggles Jewish society and other minorities faced in order to live a life of liberty. I, myself, felt bound and trapped, not by iron doors, but by words. Although being open and outgoing can help communication growth, rudeness and unnecessary judgement can hinder one’s ability to socialize and express themselves.…

Race is a common factor when commenting on a person who is trying to define who they are and identify themselves in a group of people. The fact however lies that race is not a biological concept as stated by and is rather a social perception. The way one chooses to identify their race and who they are as a whole plays a part on who they are and sometimes even their social class within the life they live. Through racialization and racial formation both in and out of the Americas even Susie Phipps was able to identify that even if you have an ounce of black you are considered black in the US because it is a way to identify as a social concept and ideological process along with Omi and Winant 's thought process. Racial identity is the classification…

Art club was a place where nobody was judged based off their personality, self-expression was never discouraged. Joining art club as a tiny 7th grader, we became friends with some of the senior high art club members, who became our mentors, likewise we developed friendships with our peers in the year above us. Every year when Olympics of the Visual Arts season came around we would spend countless hours at school working on our project.…

Stranger Paper Observation is a key factor in understanding who a person is and what makes up who they are. Over the last few weeks, I took it upon myself to observe those who I didn’t know very well. I began observing one individual within our classroom, and I began analyzing her in order to understand a little bit more of who she is. During our time of discussion I noted that she enjoys camping, eating fajitas, and claims to be both a listener and a talker. I also found out that she claims science is reality.…

A time that I felt like an outsider was at a family gathering last year. Being the youngest and having a large family makes it difficult in meeting everyone especially being shy. So, meeting new people for the first time was a little difficult for me. When it came to family events I always dreaded them because random family members always come up to you saying “Oh my gosh! I haven’t seen you since you were a baby (you were a kid).…

The experience that I would use to display all of these personal qualities would be my first semester at Miami University. I chose this experience because it has taught me to become comfortable within the uncomfortable and create an environment where I am able to adapt quickly to my surroundings. My first semester at college has made me become more independent, willing to push outside of my comfort zones, open-minded, and able to persevere through isolation. Throughout my first semester at Miami University, I’ve learned to become more independent, through most of the daily responsibilities that I hold.…

It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

Adults everyday tell their kids advice so they would make the right decision in the future. So if I had to tell a 10-year-old some inspiration to benefit them; "be who you are, don't let anyone define you or belittle you for it". I say this because the different ones are the ones to lead a positive life. I wish I followed the advice my parents gave at that age because I would've figured out those who accept me now.…

As an introvert, parties and other social gatherings in general are naturally not my strong suit. My quiet demeanor has been with me for essentially my whole life, but it especially shows when I’m with groups of strangers. I was often hesitant to speak in classes in middle school simply to not bring attention to myself. I’d much prefer to listen and follow orders than participate in class. Participation based grading terrified me.…
