As I think back to the beginning of the semester, I have realize that I knew extremely little about the Islamic faith. While reflecting on the semester, I decided to re-read my first journal entry. Students were prompted with a few questions to answer while writing out journal entry. I decided to address the questions that asked us not only why we opted to take the course, but also what we hoped to learn from the course. In my journal entry, I wrote that my main reason for taking the course was to “develop a better understanding of Islam as a global religion” (Gaining a Better Understanding, 1). I have always felt that it is important to not only educate ourselves on different cultures and religions, but also gain a number of different perspectives of these cultures and religions. In my journal entry seven, I wrote that “I personally stress the importance of understanding each other and each other’s faith, but this should be done through factual evidence, rather than through stereotypes that could be based on false information.” (Gaining an Understanding, 2). Over the course of the semester I could see myself learning and growing; …show more content…
I was thoroughly surprised when I discovered that Jesus was considered a prophet and a messenger of God in the Islamic faith. Furthermore, I was taken by back when I came across the fact that Jesus was mentioned numerous times in the Qur’an. Being born in a Christian household, I was taught that Jesus was not only a messenger of God, but the son of God. As the semester progressed, I began to notice similarities between Islam and Christianity. The Qur’an and the Bible both document stories of miracles performed in the name of God. Furthermore, the Qur’an and the Bible have a set of commandments for all people to obey. I personally found it thoroughly interesting to see the differences and similarities between Islam and

Although some principles may be the same, Islam and Christianity share some many different characteristics within the religion. Both originating from the same area, we can examine how great differences can occur with the powerful prophets of old times. Both of these religions share their differences on their views of Jesus, how each of them originated, and their personal practices. Examining these differences makes us better understand why these two religions became their own and why each of them often disagree with one…

Qureshi aims to give non-Muslims a new perspective into the beauty of Islam, not intending to convert his readers, but to enlighten them as they come to understand Muslims and respect them. A compelling theme throughout his book, Qureshi argues that history powerfully testifies to the foundational truth of the gospel. As he provides an intimate window into a loving Muslim home, Qureshi shares how he developed a passion for Islam before discovering, almost against his will, evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and claimed to be God. Qureshi illustrates the crushing inner turmoil that he endured as he was unable to deny the arguments but exceedingly hesitant to deny his…

Jesus and Muhammad- Parallel Tracks, Parallel Lives takes a historical and biographical look at the two most prominent men in religion. Written by F.E. Peters, a professor of Religion and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University, Jesus and Muhammad offers a comparative investigation of what we do and do not know about the lives and depiction of Jesus and Muhammad. By extracting from modern historians as well as the Gospels and Quran, Peters takes an objective step back in an attempt to compare and contrast the evidence held for both these men. Ranging in topics from the setting, sources, messages, and legacies of Jesus and Muhammad, Peters argues that Christianity and Islam are more similar than they seem, and should be thoroughly examined for evidence concerning their founders.…

Journal 7: An insight into Reality Above every other reason for writing this journal, my expression of gratitude for Fatma's captivatingly inspirational presentation on the genial religion of Islam, is my greatest objective. From her presentations, I took away many lessons of the truly rich culture that surrounds the Islamic faith and its followers; the impugnation of the countless rancorous stereotypes, misconceptions, and senseless prejudicial attitudes that Americans, the majority of whom who are white, wrongly accept as the truth. By the same token, I learned just how similar the Islamic faith and Christianity really are, and how an understanding of these similarities would finally allow Americans the opportunity to embrace the Islamic culture and consequently be able to respect the differences that do exist between the two cultures. Through the acceptance of these religious commonalities and differences we may begin, as a nation, the journey to achieving religious peace.…

The three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam ¬¬¬– all have one thing in common, the nature of monotheism. Judaism innovated the idea of one God about 3000 years ago, with the Israelites. Though it was restricted to the people of Israel, this was the first time a monotheistic religion came into play. Worshipping the same God of Israel, Christians were the second monotheistic believers. The teachings of Jesus Christ of Nazareth were next to become revolutionary.…

This embraces differences and encourages the production of modern ideas, perspectives, and attitudes from individuals of all backgrounds. Appiah discusses that “unless there is a corresponding diversity in their modes of life, they neither obtain their fair share of happiness, nor grow up to the mental, moral, and aesthetic stature of which their nature is capable,” this reinforces the importance and value of diversity for personal development. Several approaches to inter-religious dialogue include focusing on the role of religious leaders as peacemakers, which is helpful in challenging prejudices and stimulating universal involvement. Another inter-religious approach includes engaging in joint activities that build trust and mutual understanding, instead of having a discussion that could lead to arguments regarding different world-views.…

When attempting to compare Islam and Christianity, there are few similarities that can be found. Within this paper, the belief systems of both Islam and Christianity, will be compared and contrasted, as to reveal the more reasonable worldview. According to Islam, Allah created the earth in six days.…

As I mentioned earlier, when I came home from Greece it was so difficult to come back to negative talk about a people group that my heart had grown so fond of. Still to this day, I have a very difficult time when I hear the news or friends speak about Muslims in a way that is not completely true. The difference today is, that I now have a better understanding and the wisdom to prove that not everything we hear is true. I know that I can always learn more about the religion, but I can confidently say that my understanding of Islam has grown abundantly this semester. I know with confidence that I am better equipped to love the Muslim community without fear of offending and ultimately eventually coming to a point of deep relationship.…
