Reflective Essay: How To Improve Presenting Skills

Presenting, however, is not as easy as preparation. Presenting in front of your peers for 20 minutes is much more difficult than it sounds, at least for me. On November 19, when I first present the Jot case study in class, I could feel my sweaty palms and knocking knees even though I just stand there. When I was presenting, my voice was timid or quivers with nervousness as I felt more than 30 eyes staring at me. I realize this is what I need to improve as I would be required to present to different types of people in my career such as subordinates, superiors or colleagues, a strong communicating skill has become a highly valued skill as accountants are increasingly working on teams (ACCA, ND ). To improving this skill, I always practice in front of a mirror or my friends, as I found prepare adequately could release tension in real assessment. …show more content…
We were told that the analysis tools such as SWOT and PEST should be placed on background instead of screen, which we never knew. Also, there are too many words on the screen, which is another problem for us. As the tutor indicates, the speed of reading is always faster than presenting, audiences often lose their focus once they predict what you are going to present. On the other hand, Robert (2013) says the more words on a slide, the smaller the type needs to be, making reading more challenge for audiences. Apart from these, we were pointed out the lack of structure, the content just like several stories without any connection. Based on the feedback we received, I understand many aspects are in need of improvement, such as using bullet points instead of long sentences in PowerPoint, trying to make connections between points and making it a coherent

The last example he used was statistics, throughout the presentation he used many statistics to back up his ideas, such as the change of cancer in the last 100 years. (C5) The transitions and organization of the speech were not very clear or easy to understand. Transitions were not used effectively at all, instead of going rom point to point he skipped information entirely and just began his next point. He did try to use some organization though, covering points in a topical pattern.…

As a speaker, Koller presented by projecting her voice in a proper manner, avoiding monotony, and explaining any charts or graphs that was specifically meant for those a part of Coursera without talking down to the audience (Zobel, 2014). The slides were very well created and were not overflowing with information. Koller used the slides to reinforce the points she was making and did not directly read off of them. She made herself the focus of the talk and not the slides (Zobel, 2014).…

I understood that the audience was going to be listening to presentations for 50 minutes, therefore I was aware that if I used slides with a large quantity of words they were not going to be read by the audience. I found that the audience responded best to brief and conscious bullet points, three main overall ideas, and interesting images. The audience will not desire to read a large amount of information off the powerpoint so I really tried to maintain brief points in bold font throughout the presentation. Overall, a presenter must be aware their audience is not going to retain all the information, so instead of trying to force information upon the listener, it's best to leave them with three main overall ideas that they actually have a chance of remembering. Lastly, for both my presentations I found that it would highly aid the audience to utilize appropriate images, not only did these add value to the presentation but it kept the audience interested.…

Keep Writing Simple: Until recently, I was sure academic writing needed to be complex. I thought students who used big words and wrote long sentences appeared intelligent; however, that is incorrect (Grellier & Goerke, 2014). Since studying as an undergraduate, I have learned that formal writing requires a clear message with references that support ideas. I must apply the following principles to improve the quality of my writing.…

Though our actual presentation ran a little too long, the practice presentations were very productive, smooth, and ran for only about 40-50 minutes. I feel the main reason that presentation ran overly long was our failure to factor in the chances of technical problems with the Apple demonstrations and the varied effects that nerves have on speaking times. Additionally, we wanted to increase our speaking times in the event our guest speaker didn’t show up. Consequently, we ended up adding more slides and material than necessary, which mostly appeared in the third part of the presentation that wasn’t reached. Definitely, we all could have accounted for the time a little better, despite how our practice sessions…

From the Mesopotamian civilization to the present day civilization, writing has taken a place of importance in our daily lives; something I have always struggled with. Through school the most difficult subject that I have always struggled with is English. Growing up my first language was Spanish due to the fact that my parents do know much English. My parents were never able to read to me in English preventing me from hearing and seeing the English language; it was not until I entered elementary school that I was exposed to English. This has contributed to my difficulties in English courses throughout my education.…
